About the Game

In the distant future, humanity's effort to colonize other worlds has fallen prey to the same resource depletion effecting our original homeworld. Now, in the wake of an unspecified disaster that decimated a world's population, the war for resources rages between two human-controlled mech armies. There's probably more to the story than that, as noted through upcoming Hawken graphic novels and films, but for the most part it's window-dressing for Hawken's true purpose: to jump into an oversized suit of armor and destroy enemies with missiles and machine guns.

The first game by Adhesive Entertainment throws itself behind a depiction of realistic mech combat. Vehicles mechanically lumbers around each arena, kicking up dust in its wake, and lands from high distances with a noticable smash. Although one would imagine such a contraption to be difficult to ride, Hawken's controls are simple and easy-to-learn, centered mostly around using thrusters and dodges to avoid incoming attacks. Fuel-consuming thrusters help you make your way around the level quickly, as level-specific booster pads that launch you into the sky. Over time, players can unlock a entire garage of upgradeable mechs that can be switched between mid-match.

Hawken is certainly a visually impressive if nothing else. Each level is appropriately deserted and ruined, with lots of destructible objects to be knocked around during combat by your appropriately non-graceful vehicle. Graphically, the game also looks very impressive, offering highly detailed lighting and particle effects. In a way, those visuals are both its greatest strength and weakness; everything is great to look at, up until the light and dust effects obscure your vision during combat.

Hawken features four modes: Team Deathmatch, Missile Defense, Siege, and Free-For-All Deathmatch. The reason Free-For-All is mentioned last (and in fact, is the last to unlock) is because Hawken requires a team focus. Most one-on-one engagements favor whichever side started shooting first, so teamwork prevents victories from going to whoever has the best reflexes. Co-ordinating with other players over a headset certainly adds to the game's immersion factor, although text chat features are also provided.

Between its well-visualized combat, multiple game modes, and ongoing content updates, mech and shooter fans should find lots to love with Hawken.
