About the Game

Starting life as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, Alien Swarm's development team was snatched up by Valve to work on mainstream projects like Left 4 Dead and Portal 2. The AS team never forgot its roots however, or its planned Source Engine reboot. So when Valve allowed the team to release Alien Swarm as a standalone free-to-play title, the original creators took the opportunity to refine the project as an engrossing multiplayer experience.

Alien Swarm's straightforward story will sound pretty familiar to anyone who knows the genre. An infestation of oversized alien insects has taken control of a distant human-colonized world. The player is a member of a marine team sent to rescue any survivors and prevent the aliens from spreading further. Additional story points are provided through PDAs scattered across the compounds, although players will be hard-pressed to gather them when endless monster hordes are bearing down at any given moment.

Of course, story isn't really the strength of a game like Alien Swarm. Blowing hordes of hostile aliens to bits is, and on that score, the game is a stunning success. In each level, the players attempt to quickly complete mission objectives while dozens of aliens bear down the team's position. Four classes are available, including Officer, Medic, Special Weapons, and Tech, all of whom must work together to ensure success. An average playthrough will feature several tense firefights and last-second escapes that immerse the player in the game's tense setting. Thankfully, players gain experience points and level unlocks for weapons and gear to help last a little longer against the onslaught.

That's not to say the game couldn't be improved. Three years after release, Alien Swarm still only features a single seven-level campaign. Valve has released a full SDK for the creation of new levels, but unlike its other games, very few community maps are available. Also, considering how Valve multiplayer titles like Left 4 Dead and Team Fortress 2 include single-player options, making Alien Swarm online-only seems like an odd decision.

That said, Alien Swarm is a project of love that's as polished and refined as any Valve product. The game seems lacking only because its core experience is designed so well that players are left craving more. Combine that with Alien Swarm's low price of free, and its hard to deny that Valve have crafted a compelling action-packed title.
