About the Game

When it comes to long-running MMOs, MapleStory is one title that stands out from the rest. At first glance, one could mistakenly assume that the game is a simple 2D platformer, not a massive online world. Yet not only does MapleStory feature an expansive game map, but as of 2011 it boasted over 8 million users, most of whom were apparently taken in by its easy-to-learn gameplay and pleasantly charming esthetic.

MapleStory is set in Maple World, a fantasy setting comprised of three continents, countless towns, and a fair share of dungeons. Despite the game's cartoon aesthetic, Maple World actually holds many dangers, the most deadly of which is the Black Mage. The Black Mage terrorized Maple World until five heroes sealed the tyrant, and themselves, inside magical ice for generations. Unfortunately, the Mage's followers have plotted to free him once more, and by the time period depicted in MapleStory's latest patch, the ice has finally broken so he can terrorize the land once more.

Whether you decide to take on the Black Mage yourself or not, there are a wide range of content for players to explore. MapleStory allows players to travel the three continents of Maple World in search of adventure, completing quests and clearing dungeons to earn Meso currency, experience points, and item drops. Players begin by creating a character within a specific class type, then developing them through adventures and experience points. Upon reaching certain levels, characters can also take on jobs that allow for more specific class specializations like Thief, Magician, Noblese, and even Mechanic.

While a player can conduct a journey alone, one also has many options to team up with others along the way. Parties and guilds are featured, but MapleStory goes further to include in-game families as well. The family system allows a player to mentor "Juniors" consisting of friends, relatives, or strangers, slowly adding to a family tree in the process. MapleStory even allows for the engagement and marriages of heterosexual player characters, a fairly unique trait for a game of this scope.

At its core, MapleStory is a well-crafted MMO that has something to offer for fans of RPGs and cheerfully animated visuals alike. The game is still going strong after ten years of development, so in terms of longevity alone, MapleStory seems to provide an experience worth examining.
