About the Game

There are usually two kinds of audiences for a superhero RPG: The player who wants to create their own superhero and the player who wants to become an iconic hero. Marvel Heroes falls strictly into the latter category, promising that fans can take on the role of Marvel characters like Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, and Wolverine and lead them on an engaging story set in their popular comic book universe.

Marvel Heroes, written by comic book writer Brian Michael Bendis, centers around the perpetually misused Cosmic Cube from the Captain America and Avengers films. This time, the Cube has fallen into the hands of Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom, who intends to use its power to reshape the world in his image. Doom doesn't intend to take any chances with his newfound power however; knowing that previous Cube wielders have been defeated by Marvel's heroes, Doom arranges for Marvel's villains to distract the heroes from interfering with his plans. It will be up to the player to defeat work their way through a roster of villains before finally confronting Doom himself.

Gameplay takes the form of a top-down action RPG, similar to Diablo, Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, or Ultimate Alliance. After choosing an available character, players take on missions pitting them against enemies from varied locations across the Marvel Universe, such as Latveria, Mutant Town, and the Savage Land. Players can team up with other player-controlled heroes as they progress through the game, but may also complete the game in single-player if they so choose.

Players start the game with either Daredevil, Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, Storm, or Thing, and can purchase additional heroes or unlock them during play. Developer Gazillion Entertainment has noted that all purchasable content is strictly optional, stating that the game can be played in full without spending a cent on additional content. Paid content simply allows players to uncover playable heroes more quickly, with a wide range character and costume packs currently available.

The concept of an official Marvel Heroes MMO has been passed around for some time, with even City of Heroes creator Cryptic Entertainment once working on its development. Now that Marvel's Cinematic Universe have infused the characters with new levels of popularity, Gazillion Entertainment's version can finally follow through on the promise of a cosmic-level story and beat-em up action set across the entire Marvel Universe.
