About the Game

A fair number of online shooters feel the need to craft a contrived backstory to explain why two factions are at war with each other. It's strange, considering in that many cases, the story is almost completely disconnected from the gameplay experience, amounting to a paragraph of text explaining why the mercenaries/soldiers/resistance fighters are duking in out in a cyberpunk/post-apocalypse/modern military setting. Blacklight: Retribution on the other hand, even though technically a sequel to Blacklight: Tango Down, focuses on gameplay, customization, and visually impressive levels without bothering to explain what players are fighting for.

Blacklight: Retribution is a cyberpunk shooter in which two teams of eight players fight across a variety of gameplay modes and matches. The game's default modes include Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Domination, and King of the Hill, although Last Man Standing and the horde-based Onslaught mode were added later. Matches are generally very fast, lasting about ten minutes, with Quick Play Matchmaking letting players dive into the action.

Each match earns players a certain amount of experience, used to upgrade your character, and GP to buy weapons and items. Premium gear can also be purchased through real currency, although for the game can still be experienced entirely for free. The in-game store is also where most of Blacklight's customization options are accessed, as players can purchase outfits that provide the visual appearance of their liking.

Shooter fans should already be familiar with most of Blacklight's conventions, although two that warrant mentioning are the HRV and hardsuit. HRV's essentially replace the FPS minimap, temporarily rendering walls invisible so you can see where other players and weapon depots are located. The hardsuit, meanwhile, is a powerful mech armor available through weapons depots that can dish out, and take, significant amounts of damage. Their appearance can shift the balance of a level, although they are not invincible. Randomly-assigned weak points can be discovered using the HRV, while anyone who gets close enough with a flamethrower can burn its driver fairly quickly.

All told, Blacklight: Retribution is a fast-paced game that provides couples a few unique elements with a traditional, yet refined, shooter experience. The game can be downloaded for free from its official website, or accessed through Steam for Steamworks Achievements and Community features.
