Dota 2
Basic Information

Dota began as a user-made modification for Warcraft 3 and has grown into one of the most played online games in the world. Following in the tradition of Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Portal, and Alien Swarm, Dota 2 is the result of Valve hiring the community developers who built the mod and giving them the chance to finally build a full product out of their idea with the help of a professional team of developers and artists at Valve.

As for the gameplay, it's a little hard to describe. The camera is set in the traditional RTS perspective, but it wouldn't be fair to call Dota an RTS. And while each hero starts at level 1, and many times hits the level cap of 25, it wouldn't be fair to call it an RPG.

Lots of people have tried to assign various genre names to Dota, but we think Action RTS is probably the most descriptive. And while we don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out what genre the game is inventing, we can't stop playing it internally!

About the Game

Ages ago, the Mad Moon came into orbit around the world. Trapped within were Ancient Intelligences, the Radiant and the Dire, who struggled with neither able to defeat the other. Eventually, the two forces cracked the Moon apart, sending Radiant Ore and Direstone crashing to the surface. Over the aeons these stones affected the growth of civilizations, providing magical benefits, but also pitted societies against each other. Now heroes war with each other to protect the stones of their alignment while attempting to destroy the other.

In-game, the Radiant and Dire have opposing bases aligned on a geographically balanced map. Each side is tasked with wearing down enemy defenses until the Ancient can be attack and destroyed. Players directly control heroes fighting for either side, while AI controlled "creep" unit and defensive towers aid your efforts.

Only five heroes can fight for each team, but there are a massive number of units available, totaling ninety-nine in all. Each hero earns experience through combat, and can progress to a maximum level of twenty-five in a single match. Gold is also earned via kills that can be spent on additional weapons, armor, or consumables. Overall, this provides Dota 2 with a strong replay value, as each combination of heroes creates new opportunities for tactical approaches.

Dota 2 is designed with the competitive gaming circuit in mind, and includes a variety of features to support league play. The game also features live spectating, allowing anyone with a game install to view ongoing matches, even at the professional level. Despite still being in beta status, Dota 2 has quickly become one of the most popular MOBA games on the market. New players who wish to find out why can purchase an Early Access pack today, and try their hand at online matches or offline practice sessions with any available hero.
