Basic Information

With the disruption of the planet, ancient gods awake to once again exert their powers over the earth. The lords of nature have revived the wastelands, eradicating and subverting the remnants of modern technology. Creatures of mutation and mythology now populate the land. The ways of swords and sorcery have replaced the path of science and progress.

You are a survivor. Your youth was spent lost in times of war. Your memories of the past with its machines, computers, bright lights and buildings reaching for the skies are vague and ever fading, a distant and unreal dream. You grow accustomed to ancient ways that now once again rule the world.

About the Game

This free-to-play sandbox MMO is based on the land surrounding Lake Tahoe, and it boasts hyper-accurate rendition of same, so if you happen to be familiar with Tahoe you can revisit old haunts. It's currently in what the game calls the Prelude - basically an early release - and as of January 2013 is a Steam Greenlight title. While the game is free-to-play, there is a level cap of 30 on free-to-play accounts, a skills cap, and a limit on what you can do to help your Tribe (guild). If you want to remove those caps, you'll need to subscribe. The yearly subs fee is $95.88; the monthly sub is $9.99.

This isn't your typical post-apocalypse. Everything's gone pastoral and woodsy, after a war which ravaged the planet, and the ancient Gods have taken over to sort things out. The age of the skyscraper is done; welcome to the age of the newfangled wattle-and-daub hut. As a survivor you remember the old days, with computers and modern conveniences, but now you need to know how to make a bow and hunt your dinner.

This is an evolving title. At the moment it's just Lake Tahoe, but there are plans in the works to expand beyond the Prelude's boundaries and take in more of the surrounding territory. At the moment anything not within the Prelude starting area is surrounded in deadly fog which, when it recedes, will reveal new treasures, and a ravaged wasteland. This evolution also means that each new patch brings new toys for the player, like totems, improved crafting, better armor sets and so on.

Not that environmental hazards are the only danger. There's all sorts of supernatural beasties out there, from the Undead to more physical monstrosities. Even the weather has its part to play in keeping the player on his toes. However the big bads are the devils and the angels, currently battling it out; the Four Horsemen are on their way, the Seven Seals are about to be broken, and any minute now it's last call at the bar. Time to find out what you're made of, hero!
