Ace Online
Basic Information

ACE Online is an action based Massive Multiplayer (MMP) 3D Space Shooter. In ACE Online, players can pilot their own fighter ships (also known as Gears), on a futuristic world where they can upgrade skills or the Gear itself. In ACE Online, gamers have full control over the Gear's movement, making it very different from the traditional style RPG's mouse click control method. This is a Role-Playing Game (RPG), but with all the fun and action of a First Person Shooter (FPS). Since the background of ACE Online is based in a spacious 3D atmosphere, players need to be aware that an enemy missile can strike at any time and from any direction.

About the Game

After decades of MMO development, there tends to be a few patterns that players quickly recognize. The same player classes, the same fetch quests, and advancement-via-grinding tends to come up over and over again. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long other innovations are made in terms of gameplay or setting. On that front, Suba Games and MasangSoft have put their best foot forward with Ace Online, an MMORPG that reimagines traditional MMO systems within an anime mecha shooter.

The storyline for Ace Online is fairly straightforward, featuring two philosophically opposed armies that come into conflict over the discovery of a resource-rich planet. Character creation also follows a fairly limited JRPG model, letting players choose between one of ten pilots and one of four class-based gears. Pilots and gears can both be upgraded during play, with pilots assigning skill points each level while gears obtain new weapons and items. It all seems pretty old hat, but Ace Online's twist is that it forgoes the usual "click-on-enemy" combat in favor of dodging and weaving in massive arial battles.

Gameplay largely takes place in the open air, where player gears have full freedom of motion to combat enemies high in the sky or close to the ground. Inbetween missions, players can retire to the closest city hangar where they can buy and sell equipment and socialize with other nearby pilots. Upon reaching level 11, characters choose whether they will join the unified yet authoritarian B.C.U. government, or the free-thinking yet radical A.N.I. rebels. From there, players can begin unlocking new missions and PVP arenas, each becoming larger and more filled with enemies than the last.

While there are a wide range of story missions for characters to play, the real emphasis of Ace Online are its PVP environments. Outside of the usual party and guild experience common to MMOs, Ace Online tracks kills made by B.C.U. and A.N.I. factions as "National Contribution Points", effectively a running tally of how well each faction is faring against the other. Both sides have a variety of avenues to engage each other, such as the open world encounters, raids, and skirmish battles. One of the biggest PVP options players anticipate are Mothership Battles, where one faction's powerful Mothership spawns within the opposing faction's home territory. Mothership Battles occur once per week, and generally require large numbers of ships to bring down successfully.

While Ace Online's RPG elements don't exactly break the mold, its sci-fi setting and mecha gameplay go a long way towards making the tropes feel fresh. At the very least, the game is a brave attempt to place players in the same shoes of a mecha pilot, just as a traditional fantasy RPGs would put you in the shoes of an ordinary peasant hero.
