Vanguard Review: Final Thoughts

written by Jason "Virgil" Smith

Vanguard presents a very interesting dilemma. On one hand, the game itself has enormous potential, and each aspect is very entertaining and sound. It presents a complicated and deep gameplay experience for gamers who have become bored with the less complicated games toward which the industry has been moving. It both improves on the state of the industry and innovates.

On the other hand, Vanguard isn't complete. The developers are releasing near-daily patches, and while I commend them for releasing them, it doesn't change the overall disservice to us, the customers. Someone, somewhere made the decision to rush Vanguard onto the shelves, and it's very unfortunate.

Would I subscribe? To be honest, I'm not sure. Everything that I played, I enjoyed. The world is vast and beautiful, the mechanics are engaging, and the community is excellent. But I'm not happy with the premature release, and although continual development will probably fix the problems, they have to be a concern at the moment. The most that I can say is that it's still a possibility.

If you're a player familiar with MMORPGs, are looking for a more complex game, and are willing to put up with some rough spots, then you should definitely give Vanguard a try. If any of those don't apply to you, then you'll want to pass for now, and take another look in a few months time. One thing you can be certain of is that Vanguard isn't going away any time soon, and once the game is release-quality it will be one of the best MMOG experiences out there.
