Darkfall Dev Journal #21: Summary Status

In the latest Darkfall developer journal, we get a status update from Associate Producer Tasos Flambouras and he promises to chime in with a community driven Q&A style developer journal next time.

Anyway, since the last journal some people had a few precious days off to go home and spend the holidays with their families. This year we had a very short break, less than we've ever taken, trying to get back to the loads of work waiting for us. We're regrouping now getting back to work on some really awesome new equipment. We've been doing a lot of work around the office setting everything up to run as it should. The new equipment has been helping to speed up the remaining tasks and making our lives a little easier with a lot of things. A sound studio is being set up on-site to help with the final sounds for the game. Also at the moment, we're building a new server cluster.

Read more after the click.

this is a pretty terrible dev journal.

I skipped last week's journal and was almost forced to do the same this week, trying to get back into the swing of things and catching up with a lot of backed up work.

Ya I know.. doing a dev journal every 2 weeks is just back breaking work.

No video. No mention of a Beta. No screenshots. Why do they even have these dev journals? It's pretty clear they hate doing them. Can anyone seriously be this incompetent?

Would it honestly kill these people to open up a video recording program and take like 60 seconds of footage and press "print screen" a few times? I mean seeing as though they have an almost full featured game to record and all. (does anyone actually believe that?)

Amazing.

I can see 2008 is going to be one hell of a repeat of 2007 , 2006 , 2005 , 2004

Right before and right after the holiday break we showed the game to a couple of groups of high profile industry veterans. They were very enthusiastic about it and this gave us a big morale boost. I can't be more specific,

Then why the fuck did you mention it in the first place if you "can't be more specific"?
But then again.. the entire theme of darkfall relies on "not being very specific EVER" so I guess it's not such a big surprise.

until the next useless journal... cheers

Dev Journal January 11th 2008... "Easter Bunny VS Santa Claus" Is coming along great. The animations look good, some twinking on the sound still needs to be done. I would put up some shots but we are keeping them as a suprise.
Some high power execs at a certain studio (Guess which one, we aren't telling.) Have come in to discuss backing our game (Will they or won't they... who knows, me but I am not telling.) We showed them some videos of the game play and some design concepts. (No we can't show you those).

See I can make a fake dev journal to... YAY!!!

Uh, you read it wrong. He's implying that they've been so busy fixing problems that they've been unable to make a journal entry.

teedle:

Of course not a video, of course not a beta. As far as screenshots, there's enough of them out there as it is. They're doing the journals for the fans. They need to give the fans some measure of involvement with what's going on. But apparently you seem to think that if they're hard pressed to come up with a dev journal every 2 weeks, they should be able to come up with a video which takes at least 10 times longer to make..

teedle:
Would it honestly kill these people to open up a video recording program and take like 60 seconds of footage and press "print screen" a few times? I mean seeing as though they have an almost full featured game to record and all. (does anyone actually believe that?)

Amazing.

Because when they make a video of a movie, they want to record it on something other than FRAPS so it doesn't make the game look like crap. You need to realize that whatever they release is going to be taken literally as how the game is be released. Ergo, they release a crappy video, the game looks crappy to people who watch it and they shy away from it.

teedle:
I can see 2008 is going to be one hell of a repeat of 2007 , 2006 , 2005 , 2004

Are you honestly that impatient that you cannot find another game to occupy your time while they work on this game? I've spent a majority of the entire time this game's been in development playing a single game.

Right before and right after the holiday break we showed the game to a couple of groups of high profile industry veterans. They were very enthusiastic about it and this gave us a big morale boost. I can't be more specific,

You honestly don't know anything about public relations at all. Say the information that they're not disclosing is dealing with a possible publisher. Say they release the name of the possible publisher. Say that publisher backs out and Aventurine has to tell all their fans that they no longer have a publisher. A stunt like that alone is capable of completely ruining the company's reputation.

But keep living in a fantasy land where Aventurine is just a bunch of con artists that are making fake pictures and pretending to create a game. There is more than enough evidence out there to prove that the game exists and is being worked on. If that isn't enough, then I don't know what to tell you.

@ newcomers: teedle and a couple of others are known trolls and possibly hired assassins to discredit and slander Darkfall. Do not pay attention to them and certainly do not reply to their posts.

Yes we're Trolls because we say it like it is. So sad for you. River of tears.. cry me one.

Yes don't pay attention to reality. Avoid it at all costs. Not that that would be too hard to do for most people who have followed darkfall for 7 years now living off of alpha videos , broken promises , and outdated screenshots..

Just cashed my "discredit DarkFlop check" yesterday.. Good week of work...... I wish..

See this is what fanboys who are running out of hope do when critics point out the sad facts.. They label people Trolls and paid discreditors. lol funny

Nobody needs to get paid to discredit Darkfall. It does a good job of that all on it's own.

No. The REAL QUESTION is: When is public Beta?

According to this "dev journal" they have a nearly full featured game , right? So then why not let a guild or two in to start poking around?

Or is that nothing but BS?

Darkfall is nothing but vaporware and bullshit... Get some realistic sense people please. 6 years in development and nothing but alpha screens and 2-3 videos portraying 10% of what they promiss rofl.

You know I too sometimes wonder if waiting for this game is even worth my time - seems to me by the time they finally release it there will already be bigger and better games being released. I mean how can they possibly be keeping up with a development rate like this?

But - I find myself wondering if these trolls have brain tumors or something that keeps them bedridden... I mean if you think it's vaporware than why are you even reading? I mean talon up there lables the people who believe it's coming out - what is the lable for a person who seriously has nothing better to do with thier life than troll? I'm sorry hon, I agree with your points, you just make yourself seem real pathetic carrying on like this.

Here is why I keep reading and posting... About 6 years ago I was all hype and spitfire for this game. 5 Years ago I was still hot on any info scraps I could get. 4 & 3 years ago still looking forward to it. Now I still like to look for scraps on it, but the scraps are pretty much the same BS I have been getting for the last 4 of the 6 years. So I will say whatever I want, and if you can't take the criticism and give an intelligent response then you are the brainless twit and need to stfu. Admit there are clearly things wrong with the game and engage in intelligent debate, rather then saying anyone who says this game isn't awesome is an idiot or a troll or being paid to destroy its reputation. Clearly this things show your ignorant and blind fanaticism for a game that doesn't exist.

BTW I am a rabid fan of NUKE EM DEAD!

(A little Robocop reference... and another game that doesn't really exist.)

what sort of a game would Darkfall be if it were conceived, developed and released in 2-3 years?

that's right, it would be a buggy crap game.

Hey teedle. Did you know that pictures of the game exist? OMG!!!!1111!!!!!

I can't even begin to think how many times I've read posts that are almost carbon copies of yours.

Hey. Even more people that don't understand how long it really takes to make a game this detailed. However, for the sake of some people who haven't done thier homework, I'll expound.

Darkfall is big.. I mean really big.. Possibly the largest world in mmo history. What's more is that there is no duplicate house, rock, tree, island, anything. Every single bit of the world was handmade from scratch. No random generation of textures for towns or landforms.

In addition to the world, you have over 1000 different skills to learn which is more than any other mmo in existance.

In addition to the vast number of skills, you have a real-time combat engine which is around 500 times harder to program than a target/fire combat engine like WoW or DAoC.

In addition to the AoC-esque combat engine, there will be dynamic spawns which is also extremely difficult to correctly program. Killing a camp of a specific type of mob and that mob isn't going to respawn there. It will in a completely different place.

There are literally hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of more features that this game is going to have.

But most of you are still saying "well... It's obviously vaporware because they're promising far too much to be able to develop."

And a few of you are saying "Even still. 8 years? Who do they think they're kidding?"

And almost all of you are saying something along the lines of "They said they're finished with the game. How come they haven't spoken of anything about a beta?"

1) Everything they're promising has been implemented in other games at least once.

Real-time combat. (AoC) (TES4:O)

Player blocking. (Counterstrike)

Unique pvp positional combat. (DAoC)

Huge game world. (Take your pick of an mmo and it's most likely made this claim at least ten times within the time it was being developed to it's release.)

Over 1000 skills. (Granted there's probably no game that has over 1000 unique skills. However all that this will require is more hard drive space on your computer. Most people are already blowing over 8gb on WoW alone. This isn't a problem.

Realistic weather. (Oblivion, several mmo's.)

Realistic physics. (Most fps games employ the proper hit-detection rates and pushscales and gravity.)

etc.

The unique thing about Darkfall is that it will have all of these already-implemented ideas in one entertaining game.

Now most people are asking "well, if this is so damn great, how come other companies haven't caught on to the idea and developed a game with a similar idea?"

The short answer to this is that they have. Just like when WoW was released, Elder Scrolls 4 introduced a new genre of rpgs even though the earlier elder scrolls games employed this type of non-linear gameplay and combat. Within the next 10-15 years, you will see several mmorpgs release that boast real-time combat and free-roaming gameplay in which you are free to do anything you want. The time of target and fire korean grindfest mmo's has come and gone.

2) This is easily understandable.

"As of November 28, 2005, 21 developers work at Aventurine. Members of the company include:

* Jade El Mehdawi (Executive Producer)

As of January 29, 2007, 24 in house developers and 6 professional contractors work at Aventurine."

http://darkfall.wikia.com/wiki/Aventurine_SA

My friend's private business has more employees than Aventurine does. The reason? Most people aren't willing to permanently move to greece to become a programmer for a small gaming company's project. They've stated this over and over again. So every time you think that an mmo should be created within a maximum time limit of 4 years, that might make sense for blizzard which has so many designers for it's games that it makes seperate subsidiaries to help alleviate the bearuocracy. But for aventurine, they simply don't have enough people to create a game this massive that quickly.

3) Most people think that a beta test is to raise popularity for the game. That, in actuality is really a latent (unintended) effect. The main reasons for a beta is hunting down bugs and stress testing. Aventurine has chosen to hunt down most of the bugs on their own due to the negative effect that a buggy beta has on the playerbase.

I won't be surprised if this game takes another few months in order to be released. I've got plenty of games to entertain me while I wait.

Exactly. If darkfall is by some strange coincidence vaporware, then oh well. A game I haven't been able to play yet hasn't come out. It's not going to hurt me either way.

I'll wait for the game to come out and when it does I'll play it. However while I'm waiting, I'm going to be occupied with many other games that it simply doesn't bother me that it hasn't been released yet.

Better they release it with everything than do a half assed job of delivering a solid revolutionary mmo.

not sure if taming is in as a skill, but tamable dragons are definitely out since there is no flying in Darkfall.
About the city-building question, check the official Darkfall forums, it's hard to explain briefly how it works, we don't know much but there have been some threads with insiders' information (ppl that got to play the alpha sometime back) that are useful...

2 quick things as this flame war has been played out:

1) Vaporware is reference to software hyped up that never comes to fruition, not games not released. It's about games that were talked up so much they don't ever see the shelf.

2) It's entirely possible to be an avid fan of what DF represents to us gamers who still believe something will break the mold, and also be intelligent enough to see clear signs of problems. Voicing those doesn't make us any less of a fan, a spy, a hired gun to discredit the game, so on and so forth. Assumptions are always bad things to go by - I just suggest avoiding them when criticizing a person's character. One thing about some people (like myself) who criticize this game: we will point out facts, our own opinions, but we won't go on a rampage telling people they are idiots for having their own opinions. That's the massive difference here.
