Jumpgate Evolution: Hands-On Preview and Q&A

JR "Razor" Sutich recently attended Codemasters Connect 08 in England and on site he got the first chance to play Jumpgate Evolution. A veteran of the original game, Sutich offers a unique perspective on how the remake has come.

He also sat down with Producer Hermann Peterscheck for some old fashion Q&A.

The controls felt good and I had heard that there were some concerns that joysticks might not be able to take full benefit of the lateral thruster mechanics, but using the left hat switch on the X52's throttle seemed to work great. For those that want to have a flight model similar to the original, you can turn off the "dampeners" that determine the amount of effect the flight physics have on your movement. Just for the record, real pilots don't need any stinking dampeners.

What's so special about this? Looks like a typical MMORPG again

The main difference between this and regular space MMOs is that this one uses actual player skill for flight and shooting (IE: FPS mechanics, not RPG mechanics). Your skills unlock weapons and such.

...and if you ever played Auto Assault (dust biting jokes aside), 90% of the fun stems from the freedom (and skill) involved in controlling your vehicle or spaceship in this case. I recommend trying out the Classic Jumpgate for a taste.

P.S.: Excellent preview Razor, as always! Thanks.

P.S.2: Any Beta invites? =P

I was really pleased by the answer they gave to the PvE/PvP question.. as i have to say i enjoy Elite'esque type games like this and although EVE online is very good the one reason i can never bring myself to keep playing it is because I am a PvE with a great love of resource gathering/crafting and such styl eof play in EVE is impossible beyond a point because PVP is forced upon you..

thankfully by the sounds of it that will not be the case with Jumpgate Evolution, which gives me hope
