Funcom and Eidos announce the launch of the official 'Age of Conan' Beta sign-up program. The forthcoming Beta stages will give thousands of testers a unique chance to play the anticipated MMO before release, allowing Funcom to further enhance and polish the game prior to launch this October.

'Age of Conan' entered closed Beta last summer, but only selected partners and professional testers have been given access. The forthcoming Beta stages are now going to include an increasing number of external testers. By signing up as an eligible tester at the official website, participants are given the option to take part in two forms of Beta testing, defined as general Beta and technical Beta. The general Beta will be ongoing tests where Funcom focus on gameplay and content, while the technical Beta will be event based, dealing with aspects like stress testing, server load and large scale global log-in. The Beta programs go live this spring.

My next editorial was going to be based around imminent beta applications - I'm going to have to put a new spin on things now. ;)

Figured it was coming soon, but this announcement was a bit sooner than I'd imagined. I signed up even though I won't be able to actually play until I get a new computer this summer. But hopefully it will coincide if I am lucky enough to get in. If not, might reapply once I get the new specs.

hey im new here and am not sure on some things like; will there be a monthly fee? and anyone know the system requirements? thank alot guys

yes, like any other (decent) mmos, there will be a monthly fee. so far, this fee has been around 15 dollars for all the mmos. about the system requirements, this is from the FAQ on the main website:

The minimum requirements for Age of Conan have not yet been finalize. The game will be highly scalable so you can adjust the settings according to the performance of your PC.

dam... i dont own any MMOs, ive just played at friends house and stuff, i shyed away from WoW because of the monthly fee,but...this game will probobly be worth it , id rather it be at least 10$ compared to 15$ 150+ a year sucks

you probably spend more than 15 bucks a day on macdonalds and other stuff. 15 bucks a month is absolutely nothing!
besides, consider what you get with your 15 bucks. you get:

-constant updates to the game.
-free expansions (unlike WoW.. SCREW YOU MULLAH HUNGRY VIVENDI!).
-excellent customer support (compared to non-mmo games).
-a HUGE ever-changing world.

an mmo is very different from a simple game, so the 15 bucks is worth it, because you are not paying for something that you will be done with in a few days and go looking for something new. you are paying for long term quality gameplay that has unlimited replayability and human interaction (between other humans and the world itself).

by the way, a big kudos to you for not flowing with the masses and playing WoW for any considerable ammount of time. you probably tried it on your friend's account and played it now and then, but i'm pretty sure you never got too much into it correct? that is a good thing because now your MMO experience wouldn't be too much 'corrupted' by WoW.
WoW has sort of derailed the MMO market to what people expect from their MMOs. before it was long term gameplay quality, but now with WoW its short term low quality one-time satisfaction. it beats the whole point of playing an MMO. more so, every MMO is about 50% community interaction. with WoW, the community is basically the same 'b.net kiddies' that you've seen 5 years ago playing starcraft and diablo.

now with new MMOs, people that have played WoW as their first MMO will relate everything back to it, and compare it to it. you can't really blame them, i for example still think back to horizons and ultima when i think of an MMO, but the difference here is that those were real mmos, and were "good". wow isn't either.
already we see a few new MMOs that try to mimic WoW in it's appeal to "b.net kiddies".
thankfully, Conan is still taking the path of the 'good old mmos', and hasn't been aquired by a-holes such as Vivendi, EA or SOE

but back on the beta topic, has anyone here gotten an invite? i think i'm very unluck =(. out of all the MMOs i applied for (and thats a lot..) i've only ever gotten into EnB

will the mails go out today or tomorrow?

Umm it looks like your link is broken. I know its a bit old (the OP) so they may have taken down tie site. I had tried to get into beta over a year ago, all I got was Tech Tester... and even then all the tests were happening at the same time as my work.
