Discussion: What Canceled MMOG Would You Revive?

In our weekly newsletter we wanted to know what canceled MMOG you would want to see brought back if it was up to you. Here is this week's quesiton:

Over the years, we've seen dozens of MMOGs go the way of the dodo, but if you had your way, which game would you bring back? Would you like to be playing Ultima Online 2, Ultima X, Mythica, Wish or maybe even the recently departed Gods and Heroes?

Let us know the answer in the discussion thread.

I guess the term canceled can apply to two types of MMOs: pre-release and post-release. SO here's my selections for pre-mature death:

Pre-release: Wish, although it was set in a fantasy world (not my favorite), it was truly a step forward for the MMO genre. Vast seamless world, single server, class-less skill system, ridiculous amount of customization (mounts, pets, etc..) and Live Content. Things we hear about these days started way back with Wish, and it could've been delivered as proven by their Beta phase. RIP Mutable Realms...

Post-release: My ever-favorite Auto Assault. Call it a niche or a still-born, it remains a great concept that got shoved ahead prematurely. There were MANY bugs and problems, but these were all fixable, if only they were fixed pre-release, and avoided the myriad of bad reviews and shortage of hard cash to keep working on it. NetDevil focused on delivering shiny new content, with their skeleton Live crew and dwindling NCsoft reserves, instead of focusing on bug hunting and fixing the existing systems primarily. Another sad MMO story...

Multiplayer BattleTech: 3025 without hesitation. Right now Exteel and Tabula Rasa are the only acceptable MMO Mech combat available. Exteel may not even be a true MMO. I really do miss MPBT: 3025.

Earth and Beyond

I played it everyday it was up and mourned it when the server went down and disconnected me from my Progen Warrior forever.

Edit: I just uploaded this like 10 minutes ago just for you guys. It's the old beta movie for Earth and Beyond. A major part of this 1 minute 24 second movie is a part of the actual entrance video when loading the game...and the music is heart wreching for those who love and miss it...like I do.

Try not to sniff too loudly, fans of EnB. I do enough of that on my own over this one. :P

Tee-hee, I actually discovered your role in Wish today, after Razor suggested it. I can only imagine how it felt when the project was dropped down. Any personal statements?

When I read the title to this thread, Wish was the first thing that popped into my mind. Seriously, I was having so much fun playing the Beta, I logged off that fateful Sunday to go to work, wishing everyone happy beta testing, and when I came back, BOOM, read that the game had shut down... it was so abrupt, and left a big gaping hole.

Gods and Heroes...short lived in beta but had good concepts that I'd like to see fleshed out.

well, this game hasnt been shut down yet, but the way Clint Woreley is running it, it will be very soon. Everquest Online Adventures. SOE has eve said the game was ahead of its time when it came out. now, they treat it like a red headed step child (i mean no offense to anyone). it is sorely mistreated. yet the pc versions of this game are treated like gold. sorry for the ramblings but i would love to this game "brought back" before its let go...

Wish

Hands down the most innovative MMORPG of the last decade. It needed work, but nothing I found during beta testing would have been beyond repair. One of these days I'd really like to find out what was so critical it had to be canceled. I will always miss this one.

Auto Assault

This game did so many things right, but to my mind left a couple of critical areas short and those are what killed it. The chat system was horrendous, and the clan system they envisioned would not have been workable. Community is the backbone of MMORPGs, and the lack of community tools is what prevented the majority of players from fighting their way through the overly complex crafting system, illogical placement of enemies, and other relatively minor problems. Then business greed drove the final nail in the coffin.
