WoW: Achievement Tips

The World of Warcraft team has put together a spiffy page for achievement hunters. The best tips and hints are offered to speed things along for players. Check it out:

This page provides tips on how to become a pro at completing achievements. If you're unfamiliar with the achievement system and want to learn the basics, check out the achievements preview and the achievements FAQ.

The default hotkey to view your achievements window is "Y." If you want to compare another character's achievements to your character's, right-click the other character and select Compare Achievements.

Let us know if we missed anything! If you have additional tips that aren't covered here, you may submit them via the button at the bottom of the page.

What do you get for completing achievements? Bragging rights, and that's just the beginning! Completing certain achievements will reward you with special titles or items like pets, tabards, and mounts. Check the details in your achievements window to see which achievements include special rewards. If an achievement has a reward, it will be listed at the bottom of that achievement.

General Tips

  • Although most achievements can be earned simply by playing the game, certain achievements will require you to go out of your way to complete them. If you're going after a particularly high achievement score, there are two routes you can take: you can complete a lot of easy achievements that don't yield that many points, or you can focus on complex achievements that are worth a lot more points.
  • Money is sometimes a factor in completing achievements, so be prepared to spend some gold. For example, the achievement "My Sack is 'Gigantique'" requires you to buy a large (and expensive!) bag from Haris Pilton.

There are lots more tips and hints at the link above so don't waste another minute!

I don't get why people would want to learn how to "professionally" reach achievements. I thought achievements were there for fun. So people could skip around having fun unlocking them.

I mean when I played Spyro as younger, I allways ran around everywhere trying to find those eggs. And it was great fun. It was allways fun seeing an egg on top of a hill. Then having to figure out how to get there. That was one of the best parts about having those eggs. Having like a walkthrough on how to get those eggs, would ruin the fun completely.

But then again. That's probably only my opinion. Others seemingly find it fun, recieving neat stuff with no real effort ..

Given some of the WoW achievements are so obscure or difficult to do, what's the problem?

I know I needed to look at a strategy when the achievement was "kill the first boss of the Azjol Nerub instance with all three of his watchers alive".

Firstly I didn't know what the watchers were, I had just assumed they were trash mobs in front of the boss when I had done the fight previously, secondly I didn't see how a tank could survive with 3 trash packs and the boss on him at once.

Or the LEEEEEROY achievement which cryptically says "kill 50 rookery whelps in 30 seconds". A player who hasn't been playing since pre burning crusade times may have never been to that old world instance before.

And if you think earning the fun stuff from WoW achievements is no effort if you have a guide, you're very wrong. Many rely on luck, skill and some heavy coordination to do.

I never said it was any problem. And I know many of them are difficult to do. But I was under the impression that the reward felt so much more deserved if you tried, and failed and found - by yourself - a way to deal with it.

Yes. That is totally okay. I'm just saying that it takes away some of the fun, when you're looking at a "walkthrough" rather than trying to deal with this using your own brain solely.
So when you figure out this by yourself. You're going to have a lot more "pride" than when you read how to do it

Well. There you got elitism. Then you can sit around smiling smugly at people don't getting it, because you were pre-TBC. Also. What happened to asking your fellow player? Why did everyone get so hostile, that you need a walkthrough, since you're not able to ask your fellow player?

Yes. I agree. But look at it this way. When you use walkthrough, and managed to ge it. THen you've used this much effort to do so. You feel good. But what if you didn't use the walkthrough. Then you can feel even better. Because you thought it all out all by yourself. and you managed to pull it off

Asking other players?

Perhaps you're on an odd server, but on mine even asking something as simple as "When is the next Wintergrasp" will result in "gtfo", "noob" and my persistent favourite "ANAL O CLOCK"
