Darkfall Developer Journal #6: Hacker, Beta and Screenshots!

Tasos Flambouras checks in with his bi-weekly journal update. The team has been extremely busy locking down a beta build of their game and had a recent incident involving a hacker, as such, the journal is a bit shorter than usual. Nonetheless, the content more than makes up for it and just to sweeten the pot, Aventurine SA has thrown in two exclusive screenshots of the Shulgan drake, a mount for the Alfar race.

I don't have a lot prepared for this journal for lack of time. We've been really busy since the last update. Aside from all things to do with Darkfall, we've had to deal with the added time sink of that hacking attempt on our webserver.

I got some private messages from community members ranting something like "WTF HOW IS IT POSSIBLE FOR SOMEONE ...." regarding the intruder. I'll remind our friends of incidents involving colossal projects like Half Life 2 and World of Warcraft, and so many more you never hear about, and say that at least we caught the guy before he could do any real damage. These things happen. As far as we know he's still in custody. We hate seeing people in trouble but this guy did everything he could to land himself in it and there are also other gaming companies involved.

Shulgan Drake again!
Shulgan Drake again!

This happened right in the middle of our huge effort to prepare the beta, so I'll say a couple of things about that. There are a couple of variables to be sorted out before we talk about a date. It will happen in phases leading up to the open beta. We're not looking forward to a prolonged beta period, and we've already performed extensive internal testing in order to minimize it.

The first beta build will be very close to the full game: all races, the whole world, full gameplay, around 300 quests, countless adventure areas, hundreds of monsters, all the mounts, ships, cities, sieging, with as few limitations as possible.

Since this journal is short, we've got a couple of screenshots of the Alfar mount for you, the Shulgan drake. We recently added it to the game so we've been riding those around testing them. I would also like to thank everyone who responded to our dev sparked debate on what a next generation MMOG is, there's some great stuff there.

Until next time,

Tasos Flambouras

Best part of the update right there!

This project is a joke. Now they're blaming hackers for not having a beta? yaaaaaaa ok. Only a mindless fool would believe this. Wake up.

"We're not looking forward to a prolonged beta period, and we've already performed extensive internal testing in order to minimize it."

hahaha gets better and better.. know why they're not looking forward to a long beta?

1. because they are stupid and don't even begin to understand that these games NEED long betas and that "internal testing" means squat.

2. because they can't afford to support a long beta because no publisher will touch this game and pony up for the servers.

again , wake up.

Dark and Light v2.0 is coming.

They didn't blame the hacker for beta. If you would like to troll more why don't you do it at a carebear game forums.

Thank you

There are some people that will never be happy. We have Tasos here with a journal. We have him communicating some of what is going on and yet people are going to whine about it.

Some people feel quite betrayed apparently, for reasons that escape me to this day. Even though beta-signups were done back in 05, everyone should have realized that a game of this scope couldn't possibly have been finished in a mere 2 years of development (DF announced in 01 as a pet project of 4, count em, 4 Norwiegans. The project was purchased by Aventurine in early 03, and got its legs in mid-03 when Aventurine added more developers to the project. They currently have something like 40 working on it). Most MMO's go through a 3-4 year development cycle due to the task of programming, world building, quest design, balance and beta, and Darkfall is even more expansive and ambitious in these categories than the run of the mill game. The world alone took 18 months to build. 4 years of development is not all that big of a time for a game boasting the most advanced AI in an MMO yet, as well as gameplay mechanics which have not been tested or applied in a decade. True, DF was announced too early, but to see so many people acting like Aventurine has commited some grievous sin against them is laughable and immature. They gave their reasons for not hosting beta long ago. They did not have the human resources necessary to do a prolonged beta test, and develop game systems at the same time. If you want to know what the game would have been like, I'll give you 1 word: Vanguard. I guarantee when DF hits beta, the naysayers will be watching, and when DF releases, the doomsayers will be in the world right along with the rest of us, whining about the PK's and QQing about the loss of their gear.
