Darkfall Dev Journal #16: The Details

Darkfall Associate Producer Tasos Flambouras gets back to the journal writing this week after a brief hiatus and discusses the nitty-gritty details the team has gotten into recently. Game development is often seen as a dream profession, but in this update, he reminds people of all the things they need to do that are a little less cool.

Overall, we're on track as much as we can be. We've been plagued by various physical bugs, health issues, equipment failures, but nothing seems to be able to keep us from the mind-blowingly boring tasks of QA, and adding content that have become our daily routine for the past few months. On top of all that, we're having a hell of a time getting some positions filled. We have a very high standard, and while we're getting a lot of applications in, it's not easy finding the right people.

Right now, it's all about the millions of little things.

So far we've been using the same placeholder grass you can see in screenshots and videos. Now we've got a lot of different vegetation variations in place depending on the area.

pics please....

All right, they are on the final stretch! I can personally expect beta to come sometime before February 2008.

Well, overall I was at least pleased with this journal since eventhough there's nothing new going on at least they are informing us of where they are at at the moment. Even if we still have no clue if the beta is comming out 7 months or 7 years from now, at least they gave us something.

Although it can be aggravating, I'm at least pleased to hear they have high standards when it comes to hiring someone. But please, with that loan you guys got, for goodness sake hire more people in the art department. I'm not sure if that's one of the areas that you are looking for people in or not, but I really do hope so...

Also, just some friendly advice, not to be mean or anything but lets stop bringing up this Asp guy. I think just about everyone in the community takes "his" opinion with a grain of salt. Nobody knows who this guy is, he never posted in the DarkFall forums before previously, never debated on any of the serious issues and went there with the idea that DarkFall was vapourware, so he could have been shown a stick figure and gotten excited. For all we know this could be a make-believe person. Why did he not take any pictures of the team and the office while he was over there and show us? That would have been way more believable than some written words...

Next time you guys decide to let anyone visit you over there and make a big deal about it, please let it be someone from the forums that's been around a while, has a lot of posts and has greater knowledge of all the issues that has been discussed about in the community. What that person has to say would be taken a lot more seriously... make sure he takes pics too :)

Eh, sorry, thought it had wordwrap :(

Anyways. Always exciting to get an update from the devs, regardless if it is "boring." I get krunk everytime I think about the game; I start randomly swinging on babies and whatnot, I'm so excited. Sigh.

not of the new vegetation. I was always wondering if trees were going to be copies of the same model randomly placed on the terrain and it seems that they are now in the process of improving on that field. A screenshot would be very nice...

They're having a hard time filling positions because no one wants to work on a game that will undoubtabley be a failure if it is ever released and have it on their resumes. There is abasolutely **NO WAY** this game could ever hope to compete in todays MMO market anymore against games like War and Conan... Not to mention things like the new WoW expansion and the countless other mmorpg's coming down the pipe.

This game is about 3 years too late.

Sadly during these 3 years noone has made anything even close to what DF is promising

Go back to the WoW forum, kid.

"3 years late" you say... And what happend during these 3 years ? Conan will be just WoW with some more realistic graphics and with some more "player-depending" figting with the moves while fighting...

This is all just more useless words.

Don't these people get it by now?

Anything short of them announcing a public Beta at this point is
all pure BS...

It's nice to see that they have shadows working. Pretty low sun angle to get the ice golem's shadow on the cliff. Looks like a huge hammer in the left hand. Or it could be something totally different. Who knows?

Sigh, still saying it will never come out, DF would be crap if they released it 3 years ago, they want beta to be as good as possible, so that they can have a SHORT beta, short beta + long develop=short develop + long beta.
Would you want a shitty beta, or a GOOD one? The developers have been working hard, they have been working on this for 5 years, not 7, 7 years ago this was just an idea, the Aventurine took over, with only 'bout 20 people, now they 30-40 according to Asp.
