EverQuest Online Adventures: Interview with Clint Worley

A few weeks ago, we interviewed SOE CEO John Smedley and a casual reference to their four and a half year old Playstation 2 MMOG EverQuest Online Adventures set off a bit of a furor on the forums. Today, we follow up on fan demands for an EQOA expansion pack in this interview with Senior Producer Clint Worley. Click on to find out SOE's plans and get an update on this below-the-radar MMOG.

"We have a steady player base that's there, but early on with the Playstation 2, EQOA faced a lot of challenges," Worley admitted. When it first launched, the Playstation 2 network adapter - something that would become internal in the next generation of consoles - was expensive and difficult to find. "The whole online gaming with the Playstation 2 console was an admirable attempt, but it was still ahead of its time."

yeah, this guy is insane, has he ever even logged onto the eqoa Forums, or talked to a Dev to see what the players want? SoE is bleeping stupid if they don't see they'd have a mmo monopoly for eqoa with an expansion.

players want an expansion, not an update every 4months, which isn't "free", tell this guy to visit the forums to see what the players really want, because if he doesn't change a few comments he made around then that steady population, which he lied about, is going to get even worse, because all people want at this point is an expansion.

"don't want to force people to buy an expansion pack" lmao, 14.99/m for 4months for 1 update, ALL THEY WANT IS AN EXPANSION, get that through your head SoE.

and the 'free' updates are ALWAYS bugged to hell and back. as for 'forcing people to buy an expansion pack', are you serious?! THAT is EXACTLY what us PAYING customers, who PAY his wages, want!!

and then he proceeds to say something about if they wer to work on an expansion, all the 'free' updates would stop for 18-24 months. well, if he had even the slightest bit of business knowledge, he would have had that expansion out already, and working on the next 1. how is it that EQ and EQ2 get their regular updates PLUS still get expansions like clockwork?

to me, its like they are forcing people to leave console games and go to pc games. i, for 1, hate pc games. rather be relaxed on my couch playing a game, than to be sitting in a chair at a desk. isnt that being a lil close to work? i think it is.

stop treating EQOA like the red headed, beaten step child of MMO's, and give us what we deserve. 1,good updates would be nice. not that crap, they are so proud of (fishing tournaments [omg, what a god dam joke and waste that is] and halloween costumes as example). or, 2, maybe lose the current developers, and get some people in there that care about their work. 3, an expansion!!

we pay the same price as other games who claim 8 million+ players, yet, we dont even get 1/16th of the deserved content/updates. why do they have so many players? biggest reason THEY LISTEN TO THEIR CUSTOMERS!!

i'm sorry for my ramblings, but, yet again SOE has pissed me, and MANY others, right off! how may times are they going to kick us in the nuts?...

i HIGHLY doubt that. reason being, his interview. the guy has no clue in the slightest on whats goin on, or what the players want.

I cannot say for certainty, but 99% of the time when someone is interviewed, they check out the article after. So at worst, he's a click away =)

I hope so, if your reading this feedback Mr. Worley, I'm begging you to actually come over to the EQOA forums, and talk to the community. You'll see what we really want, and you'll see how much an expansion would net you in money, since thats all it's about. Please atleast reply here if you won't visit us there. Thanks!

Well I was going to reply to this but during typing it up everything just disappeared when I went to "preview" it...

All I'm going to say now is. If there was enough players to justify Frontiers, and according to Worley "the subscriber base hasn't changed since the day the game launched", then how isn't there enough players to justify an expansion now?

Either Worley or Smeedly has their information messed up because they both said something different about the subscriber base.

Also I don't know how many of you on here visit the EQOA forums but I found this on there, http://www.linkedin.com/pub/1/977/714

Scroll half way down and you come across this.

Producer- EverQuest Online Adventures Underfoot Expansion- PS2
Sony Online Entertainment

(Privately Held; 501-1000 employees; Computer Games industry)

January 2003 - November 2003 (11 months)

Started development on the 2nd expansion for EverQuest Online Adventures for the PS2.
90% complete and product was moving into the test cycle.
It expanded on the existing world by 30%.
Poor product sales fromt he original title lead to the cancellation of this product.

Seems they were working on one right after Frontiers released, even though the players were always told "nothing was in the works"

The only thing keeping me from playing this wonderful game again is the lack of players. I remember I reactivated my account last year for 1 month, the whole month I only had 1 group. I would hang out in low level hunting areas that were once populated so I could help them out or power level them. But it was all empty. I was playing on Diren Hold. It was like a ghost town.

SoE is pushing people away with this lack of hope of the game. I don't want to reactivate my account just so the game can close in a year or two. I want security to know that I can play this game long-term. An expansion pack or a sign that this game will be ported to the PS3 would be a huge sign of hope for the game.

It also doesn't help that you don't advertise or promote the game. I mean look at WoW, there are STILL commercials for that game on TV. EverQuest 2 doesn't even have commercials anymore, and look at that game. It's starting to suffer the same fate as EQOA.

You can't just sit there and expect people to play. Promote the game, please I'm begging you. I'd love to keep playing again. I love EverQuest, but you guys aren't doing a good job with promoting your products. At least in my opinion, I'm no expert.

^^ you dont need to be an expert to know that SOE only wants 1 thing...to make as much money as possible in the shortest amount of time possible, then move onto the next thing. imo, the place is run with idiots straight out of high school, or burnt out old peeps who just dont care any more. they dont see the bigger picture. "make some money now, and screw over the customers, or keep them happy, keep them comin back, and they will bring in more family and friends. therefore we can make even more money!"

not only does this game need a complete over haul and/or expansion to the ps3, SOE needs an complete over haul too. get some smart people in there that have some what of a business sense... (and better mods, dev's, and gm's too. most of them are cockeyed, and more crooked than a 3 dollar bill. extremly poor customer service. talked down to, disrespected. and if you dont kiss their ass's, u get a suspension/ban for even farting the wrong way, while they hook up the ass kissers with glitches and dupes and free gear/money)

lol, 2months later and he hasn't even said one single word. Not made any effort to read this, post one sentence or come visit us on the EQOA forums. SOE is blind to not see EQOAs potential. It's things like this that make it impossible to hold any respect for people like him. I guarantee he read the comments to his interview, but he wouldn't even say a single frigging thing, nor just take an hour and come visit the community. Worthless, useless, and less-money in his pocket, because he's so oblivious to what eqoa is/would be. goodbye until an expansion/sequel is/if ever made.

Did a quick check and was shocked to find the UK Pal version of the original game is still available on Amazon UK for the price of a what you'd expect to pay for a new Xbox 360 game. What's worse, as someone points out, is the game is useless as it only allows you to access the now non existent European servers. If there's anyone left playing in the UK, then they must be using the US version of the game...and US console I guess. The Frontiers edition never got a European release of which I remember much whinging about. And you guys think you've had it bad...

after a phone call into SOE not to long ago to the EQOA section, i was treated with such disrespect. after paying their wages for 4+ years, i get treated like that?! screw them!!! screw SOE altogether!! if at all possible, they will never recieve another red cent from me ever again. threw out my ps2s, and sold off my ps3s. yea, i probably went a lil to far, but if anyone heard the disrespect i got you would have done the same thing. forget SOE and their dieing company full of idiots and high school drop out programers.

should all move to xbox. i know their customer service owns, and they actually have games worth playing on the 360! a year+ later of ps3, and theres still crap to play on it.

SOE = Shit Online Entertainment
