1UP has posted a new interview with Cryptic Studios' president Michael Lewis, and Chief creative officer Jack Emmert, on their upcoming title, Champions Online. In the interview we hear about issues with making an MMO for both the PC and Xbox360, as well as differences between Champions on City of Heroes.
Emmert says "computer," but Champions is conceptualized from the ground up as a cross-platform MMO -- Xbox 360 and PC both. "We're designing the action of the game to be more console-like," says Lewis, a code phrase that generally makes PC gamers shrivel. And Lewis senses your pain: "It's really a bit of a challenge getting that to work on a PC, because people have a different expectation of how things work.... [Consoles and PCs] have evolved different interface paradigms. You've got anything from button combos to popup menus.... You can text chat on a PC by default, and you can voice chat on an Xbox by default.... We've been designing the game since the beginning to work with just the controller and not require a keyboard, but each different platform will have a different interface. To be honest, the biggest challenge designing for a console isn't the controller, but the fact that the screen is so much smaller. Even though Xbox 360 is HD capable and a lot of people have HDTVs, it's got to work on old standard definition televisions."
