RPG Vault and EVE developers take a look at the five biggest misconceptions potential players have about the game. They are:
- Newbies will never stand a fighting chance against old players
- EVE is only about combat
- Mining is the only way to earn money as a rookie
- You can't enjoy the game if you aren't in a major alliance
- EVE is not meant for casual players
The fleshed out reasons why the above are not true is available at RPG Vault.

It's been this way, aside from grinding missions-which most at the upper levels are half way across the galaxy, and some are in 0.0 space (good luck getting through the bottle-neck systems to get out there, cause they're CAMPED ALL THE TIME!).- for a LONG time, 5 years I think it is now? I played EVE for 14 months. I found it refreshing that skills were gained over time, instead of grinding NPCs all the time. Until I found that training a skill would take 40+ days, right after I JUST got the pre-req skill before it that took 28 days! So, YES, noobs are NOT going to be able to compete against someone who's been in the game for 5 years. Just forget about it. Mining IS the only way to make money. Since it takes money to make money in EVE, if you don't have it, you aren't going to get it. There you go, off to do missions again.
EVE is a Hard Core PvP game. Period. Get over it.
The ONLY thing mildly truthful about this statment is that you CAN enjoy the game without being in a major alliance. Oh, but wait, remember those high level missions you have to do? Well, they're out in 0.0 space, which is camped at the systems you need to go through to get to the missions you need to do to make money.... Yeah, those systems are all camped 90% of the time by MAJOR ALLIANCES. If you're not in one, you're KOS (Kill On Sight). That's the way it is people. Don't listen to the ads, don't listen to the random posts by people who think they know what they're talking about. (sure the OP of the article has 2100+ posts, so what? She works for WarCry, who's being PAID by CCP, the owners of EVE-Online to help them sell more subsriptions. Truth is, this article is FALSE. EVERY one of these things is how life is in EVE. I enjoyed EVE until they nerfed the hell out of MY particular skill set, added MORE skills I needed to have, and then made my weapons more ineffective vs. other ships. THEN, they added more Warp Core effects that prevents any player from being able to run away from a bad combat situation unless they have 5+ Warp Core Stabilizers in their Low Slots. Even then you're still screwed unles you're the right Race that gets more low slots in their ships. and even THEN, more times than not, you're still screwed. Yeah, 14 months, and Nerfs were enough to turn me away from such a great game. I hope people who haven't played EVE don't and won't. buuuuuuuuut, that's just me. Good Luck, and Fare well! |

EvE is a wonderful game with many game mechanics to master and lots of subtleties to uncover. It will not hold your hand and if you are not mindful it will bite, but if you are persistent and continue to learn it will pay off.
I'm sure Murph is happy back in Azeroth. |
