The Secret World Screenshots Leaked

Two pre-Alpha screenshots were "leaked" from Funcom's horror-cult MMO, The Secret World, showcasing a mutated zombie in a rather pretty suburban street. The project's director, Ragnar Tørnquist, confirmed on his blog that the screenshots were included in Funcom's quarterly report:

"I can't say much (although that day is rapidly approaching) but I'll say this: It definitely means something. The shots are real and undoctored - I captured them myself from the latest build of the game last Thursday. Yes, that's a real location in the game, not a proof-of-concept or a demo level. And no, of course it's not done. I think the game looks absolutely fantastic, but it's going to look even more absolutely fantastic when it's released."

Excellent find, Max. Too bad my faith in Funcom is about kaput at this point. I'm done following their games excitedly. I'll let this game launch, and play it with no expectations. If it's good and they got their act together, great. If not, no surprise!

I haven't played AoC yet, but I've noticed some disappointment by many hardcore players, due to their missed expectations. Personally, I would wait few month before playing any newly released MMO. Releases will always disappoint on one level or another, until more patching and polishing is applied.

As for the "leaked" screenshots, I think Funcom big wigs wanted to reassure their investors and showcase their progress. I doubt they would release anything in this fashion unless they absolutely had to.

Please don't confuse my disappointment with the game for game launch blues, I and others aren't new to the genre. If you play the game you'll know -- it's a sinking ship. This isn't a case of a few bugs or anything like that. The game is fundamentally flawed, and FunCom has shown no intentions of addressing it in any sort of timely manner. If anything, the game has gotten progressively worse over time.
