Take my character on WoW, for example; I'm close to him, but I feel like I've only known him - my own avatar - for a part of his life. Fallout 3 tries to combat this by having you begin from birth and 'level up' through age, distributing points along the way. Great idea, but a lot of other developers simply cannot be arsed. |

The Death of Story, Part III: Character Stories
Character stories area told in MMOs so frequently we often don't even recognize them for what they are. They will exist whether there are active world stories or not. Such tales survive even if they are completely ignored by the devs. But as with all things in gaming, with proper attention character stories can be made stronger.
