WoW: Blizzard Now Boasts 11 Million Subscribers

World of Warcraft now boasts 11,000,000 subscribers. That's right subscribers, not merely eleven million accounts. It doesn't seem all that long ago that Blizzard was trumpeting the ten million mark! Read the official word from Blizzard below.

Anticipation continues to mount for Wrath of the Lich King® expansion as Blizzard Entertainment®'s massively multiplayer online role-playing game reaches new milestone

Paris, France. - October 28, 2008 - Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. announced today that the subscribership for World of Warcraft®, its award-winning massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), now exceeds 11 million players worldwide. This milestone was reached as the beta test for Wrath of the Lich King®, World of Warcraft's second expansion, nears completion. Wrath of the Lich King will launch in several regions around the world starting on November 13.

World of Warcraft's Subscriber Definition

World of Warcraft subscribers include individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers. The above definition excludes all players under free promotional subscriptions, expired or cancelled subscriptions, and expired prepaid cards. Subscribers in licensees' territories are defined along the same rules.

I graduate in 6 months and really need some sort of computing related job. Shame there are no programming places in their Euro offices.

I see this as no big surprise or accomplishment. I assume the game is gaining more popularity overseas and will do so for some time, as they are "behind" us some what on the WoW obsession.

It's kinda like the movie Max Payne being number 1 at the box office when it is up against the likes of Beverly Hills Chihuahua and The Secret Life of Bee's. WoW is winning a battle against (current) games that are truly terrible.
