Tabula Rasa to Shut Down

Here's the text of the announcement as posted on the Tabula Rasa site:

To the Tabula Rasa Community,

Last November we launched what we hoped would be a ground breaking sci-fi MMO. In many ways, we think we've achieved that goal. Tabula Rasa has some unique features that make it fun and very different from every other MMO out there. Unfortunately, the fact is that the game hasn't performed as expected. The development team has worked hard to improve the game since launch, but the game never achieved the player population we hoped for.

So it is with regret that we must announce that Tabula Rasa will end live service on February 28, 2009.

Before we end the service, we'll make Tabula Rasa servers free to play starting on January 10, 2009.

We can assure you that through the next couple of months we'll be doing some really fun things in Tabula Rasa, and we plan to make staying on a little longer worth your while. For more details about what we are doing for Tabula Rasa players, please click here.

Stay tuned for more information. We thank you for your loyal support of the game and encourage you to take us up on the benefits we're offering Tabula Rasa players.

The Tabula Rasa Team

I guess that without Richard Garriot, there really isn't a "Richard Garriot's Tabula Rasa," eh?

My condolences to the entire Tabula Rasa community.

This seems like an exact replay of Auto Assault's end of days. You got a major patch on the test server (D15), a community that pushed hard to grow its population and a publisher shuffling staff in the background.

It's definitely a sad day for the MMO community, knowing first hand that TR was freshly different from everything out there.

R.I.P.T.R.

Wow thats quicker than expected
shame for TR fans

As a long time player and supporter of this title, I feel nothing but animosity towards NCsoft. They seem to have a habit of killing off any game that isn't up their standards of success, without even making an effort to improve things.

All subscribers are being offered some lousy rewards in the form of game time for Lineage II and CoX, Aion beta access, and some free digital downloads, but none of those take away the sting of losing your all-time favorite MMORPG.

My condolences to the Tabula Rasa developers that were laid off during the holiday season, seriously, that is some terrible stuff. All of them are awesome people, and I hope that they all find new and more stable jobs.

To NCsoft, nice job, you guys have absolutely no connection to your consumers. Thanks for nothing.

I know this will be a rather short posting but wow, I can't believe it's being shut down.

My condolences to the community. I feel your pain.

Took longer than expected. It never took off from the get go. It was doing great till Richard slapped himself onto the title, then it all went down from there.

I feel that NCsoft is a bit bitter at Richard for his second failure, and undoubtedly, conning them into help fund his adventure into space with the ability to use it as a marketing device (which utterly failed). Or at least I would.

But alas, contradictory to Funk's comment, Tabula Rasa will be Tabula Rasa, even without its overly priced mascot Richard Garriot.

I always liked the look of that game, good thing I didn't buy it though.

It did have a nice look to it, but I was too bitter about AA to bother to give it a try after launch. :p Maybe if it hadn't been for the preceding failure, RGTR might have done a little better.

It's a shame they are killing it off. I was looking forward to getting it and I actually considered picking it up last week. Good thing I became a member here since then, else I would have bought it without knowing the doom and gloom on the on the horizon
