Study: "Video Game Use Is Negative"!

image

TechRadar reported that researchers at Brigham Young University in Utah found out that gamers are more likely to drink, smoke weed and ignore friends as the amount of time playing video games went up:

Statistical analyses revealed that the more people play video games, the more frequent their involvement in 'risky' behaviors like drinking and drug abuse. Daily gamers reported smoking marijuana almost twice as often as occasional players, and three times as often as those who never play.

The study found that nearly three quarters of male students in the study played video games regularly, compared to just 17 percent of their female counterparts. For young women, self-worth was low if their video game time was high.

One ray of sunshine - the study found that the connection between gaming and anti-social behaviour was only 'modest', and the researchers themselves hoped that future studies would exonerate family-oriented consoles like the Wii and multiple player games.

The researchers concluded that "the most striking part is that everything we found clustered around video game use is negative."

Is gaming the source of all evil? What do you think?

Captain Obvious awaits your responses!

What a load of crud.

Considering this was done at BYU says it all. I'd toss this away with the rest of the garbage.

BYU, eh? Figures something like this would come from there.

That is so true. And it explains a lot.

LOL yeah we call them STUDENTs over here hehe

Seriously though, I spend masses of free time on MMO's and at 35 I rarely drink (havent had any alcohol in about five years), Never smoked, never done drugs and dont ignore my friends.. so Im living proof that those likelihoods in gamer are not written in stone.

I hold about as much belief in those findings as I do those that say people who watch violent movies are more inclined to commit violent acts... its Rhubarb pure and simple, all these things are just poor, lightweight excuses to fool us into thinking these things are responsible for everyone's bad habits or poor behaviour when they aren't. we are all responsible indivually for everythign we say, do and let influence us... but at the end of the day the responsibility lies with us because it is our conscious independant thought and decision making in every instance.

Ahh Utah, home of the Church of Mormon... nuff said! ;-)

Oh god not this argument again.... I think that I can not say anything that hasn't been said before about this sort of crap... Maybe I should play along. Ok, let's go with that :D

RUN! The games are coming! They are going to turn our community from loving and compassionate to evil and sinful! Do not let the devils corrupt your souls! BURN THE GAMES! BURN THEEEEEM!

Ok, that sounded stupid :P Anyways I expressed my feelings.

I know 5 people right off the bat who drink excessively, smoke pot and never socialize with people who have never touched a video game in their lives. I'd say TV is more of a problem.

I have been a gamer pretty much since I was old enough to grasp the concept. I have never smoked, drank, or done any drugs. But video games the source of all evil? That is complete crap.

Maybe... Now that you mention it, I haven't seen muffins around for a while. And the bastard hasn't updated Dimfall in God knows how long... He must have went into hiding, figuring his attempt wouldn't work. Ha. He was no match for my cleveri..ty..ness.

Why don't scientists ever study anything useful? It seems like all they do is blame gaming for everything.

I know, perhaps it's easier to blame video games for everything than do some proper research.

Any form of media will be blamed, because it's easy to do. TV was blamed, and before that Radio was blamed. Guess what was blamed before Radio existed? Books.

The author of the above mentioned study, Dr. Larry Nelson from BYU commented on his results, and attempted to clarify it:

...in an interview with Edge, the study's co-author, Dr. Larry Nelson with BYU's School of Family Life stressed that although there is a correlation, that doesn't necessarily mean gaming causes any of the associated negative traits that the study found.

"The study absolutely does not find that videogames cause this behavior. We've repeatedly tried to emphasize that in the study itself. It was all correlation," he said.

He made clear that a correlation simply means that as one variable changes, so will another. "All we know is that it's all related, and maybe it's a third variable that is causing the problems..."

The study, which he called a "first step," did not come to any conclusions regarding a potential third variable that would increase videogame use and supposed bad behavior.

The authors of the study, who polled over 800 university students across the U.S. (no BYU students took part), purposely focused on potentially positive aspects of videogame use with the belief they'd find positive correlations, said Nelson. But the researchers claimed to have found no--zero--positive links.

For instance, the study found videogame use correlated with greater drug use and drinking behaviors and poorer quality relationships with friends and parents. Violent videogame play was associated with more sexual partners; female gamers also reported lower self-worth.

But a lot of college students experiment with drugs, alcohol and sex. Wouldn't that skew the results?

"Absolutely," Nelson answered. "... One factor [of increased substance use] could be the experimentation that goes on with [drugs and alcohol]." He also said an increased amount of freedom for students to make their own decisions, whether it's to smoke a joint or play more videogames, could also play as a factor with the correlations that the study discovered.

Nelson admitted that this wasn't an exhaustive study about videogames; it was focused on young adulthood, and didn't explore some of the more widely-accepted benefits of videogaming.

"If we had done a study specifically on videogaming ... I'm sure [benefits] are there. There's no doubt they're there. We're not saying there is nothing at all positive about videogames."

He added, "Some young adults are flourishing during this time period [of young adulthood]. Others are floundering. Given this time period is unlike any other--young people can do what they want, they don't have their parents looking over their shoulder all the time--it's up to them to choose. How they choose to spend their time can be a bigger factor in their lives than ever before because they're in control."

As for future studies, Nelson hopes to narrow the focus onto gamers with certain personalities or who play in family or social settings.

I guess that makes sense that people with addictive personalities are more likely to have other vices besides gaming.

You can do all the research you want and try and blame games for causing problems, but it always comes down to personal choice unless someone is holding a gun to your head.
