Disney Announces World of Cars

Disney Interactive has announced that a new MMO will be showing up this summer. Called "World of Cars", the game will be based in the Cars movie world. Find out more about "World of Cars" below:

This summer, Disney Online will launch World of Cars Online, a 3D online world based on the hit movie CARS. Players will be able to take an amazing ride into a wacky world full of fun and adventure by designing their own car, becoming a racing legend, making new friends, and playing mini-games with Lightning McQueen and the rest of the cast. Just some of the features World of Cars Online will include are:

image

  • Create a Car - Players can pick the body style, color, wheels and name to trick out their own ride
  • Race for the Cup - Players start on local dirt tracks and work their way up to the national circuit to become a Piston Cup Champ
  • Explore the Open Road: Starting in Radiator Springs and driving beyond Carburetor County, players can explore a whole new world of snow racing, dune jumping, and beach wheelies
  • Build Your Own Race Track and Garage: Players can expand and decorate their Garage as well as build their own racetracks and invite friends over to race on it
  • Play Fun Mini-Games: There are awesome mini-games like tow truck driving, tractor tipping, stunt shows, and more
  • Cool Car Add-Ons: Players can earn coins to upgrade their Car with new paint colors, spoilers, rims, fins, bigger engines, and more one-of-a-kind items
  • Make New Friends: Players can meet and chat with Mater, Guido and Luigi, and other wacky characters from the movie as well as thousands of other players
  • Become a Legend: Players can steer their way to earning fans, sponsors and winning the Piston Cup, joining Doc, Lightning McQueen, and other elite racers!

To provide players with a sneak peek into The World of Cars Online, Disney Online recently launched The World of Cars Online TEST TRACK at www.WorldofCars.com. Now live for PC and Mac users, the TEST TRACK allows players to create their own Car and race it on test tracks, which earns players Car Coins that they can spend when The World of Cars Online launches this Summer. Features of The World of Cars TEST TRACK include:

  • Car Creator - Three simple steps to creating a player's own Car, including a Garage where they can customize their ride
  • 2 Tracks: Training Track and Carburetor County Speedway
  • Leaderboards: Players can compare their track times against other players on the Racing Sports Network leaderboard
  • Unlock Collectibles including a Bonus Track - Race Codes are located inside specially marked Cars die-cast toys from Mattel

I must be going blind, too. I could have sworn I saw that Disney is making an MMO. Lemme check again.

Ah, damnit.

Why is it that the voice in my head refuses to get me a cupcake?

What's so strange about Disney making an MMO?

They've successfully made Pirates of the Caribbean Online. They have a kid-oriented one called Pixie Hollow. Why shouldn't they make one?

You'd be surprised at the numbers kids can pull. Heck, Club Penguin had over 12 million users (!)

Restriction for underage gaming is understandable and desirable by parents. Sandbox concepts won't work for that audience because it can be abused.

Technically, these games are still called MMOs, just very limited ones.

I just don't read, it works fine.

I'm pretty sure most/a lot of that is from Trackmania; a much better game, I can't wait to see this fail though, it'll be fun.

Actually PotCO has some pretty impressive numbers. As Sigoya said, however, lots of parents are looking for online games for the 'tweens'. Not quite ready for the more adult worlds like WoW, these kids aren't interested in "Playhouse Disney" or offline gaming. Companies like Disney Interactive and Cartoon Network (FusionFall) make games to fill this specific niche. They do a damned fine job of it too, speaking from a parent's perspective. ;)

I actually really liked the concepts for the POTCO game, I would just think with all the talent at Disney they could have made it much better.

DM: From the deepest crypts crawls the undead thread, it's death rattle shakes you to your core. What foul necromantic forces brought forth this foul beast.
Cleric: I attempt to turn undead.
DM: You can't this is a WoW forum D&D magic does not work here.
Cleric: Well guys we are @#$%*%!
Wizard: Agreed, I believe this Necrothread was created by a dread ForumLych, impossible to stop, without a sense of humor.
Fighter: Very well I throw a badge or some other posting reward down at the necrothread and prepare a tactical retreat.
DM: The necrothread pauses at your offer, snaps up the reward and slinks off deeper into the internet.
Rogue: Phwew! That was close... I wonder if there are even more ancient Necrothreads ahead of us?
Fighter: We will only know when we continue on our journey through the crypts of Warcry.

Probably, huh? It's pretty simplistic given that it's only a year old.

Ok fair enough, makes sense

Would like to know what those impressive numbers are that you mention Kalia?
I know it probably wont be accurate, but im still interested whether its along the lines of 50...50k...0.5 mil.....or whatever :D

Jeez people, this is Disney. They make stuff, for kids. Now they are making another MMO, for kids. Why are you starting to criticize it and mentioning trivial comparisons to much larger scale MMOs that are aimed at a much broader audience?
I personally think it's great. If I was a parent, I'd have my kid play this instead of some other choices available. Actually I'd not let my kid play MMOs at all.

As I see it, it will be no more or less than RuneScape or Habbo.
The only exception from this MMO to every other one is that this one seems to be more aimed towards kids.

Friendship is like peeing on yourself: everyone can see it, but only you get the warm feeling that it brings.
