You can(and need) to disable that. Its funny how peope will deal with something forever and then one day realize that it takes seconds to do away with it. Educate yourselves folks. |
WarCry Choice Posts: 10107 Joined: 4 Aug 2004 | After I bought my new system, I quickly became annoyed with the way that worked. Within 10 minutes of looking online, I had found how to disable the function/feature. |
WarCry Choice Posts: 6301 Joined: 30 Jun 2004 | Personally, I'm not gonna waste money and time and patience with vista until there comes the day when DX10 is widespread in every game. And at that point, I would probably also try to make a dual-boot on my system so I would only need to use vista for the games.

I maintain that computers with this sort of specification would have been regarded as a supercomputer well up to the mid-1990s. Indeed, back when I was using an old 486 with 8MB of RAM, I probably would have screamed to hear that operating systems would eventually need computers that powerful just to run them with any semblance of speed. I've got an old 600MHz Celeron in my room, along with the four other computers I own - the latest version of Debian Linux with FVWM (which is still useful, despite first being programmed in the 1990s!) will run perfectly, and things like Fluxbox and Enlightenment would work as well, while the latest version of Windows that would run fluidly would be Windows 2000. Yeah - eight years older than Debian Lenny.
I don't see why he'd be wanting a Prius anyway. The Prius breaks down after eight or nine years, with a necessary replacement of the battery pack - which tends to cost more than the car is worth by that stage. A properly maintained internal combustion engine can last decades. |

On the contrary, I understood precisely what he was saying - he related not adopting Windows Vista to trying to put an old engine in a new car, and thus hopelessly clinging to the past, but there are so many problems with the metaphor that I went for the most obvious criticism - that a Prius is a pile of crap anyway, which is surprisingly inefficient, doesn't work after eight or so years and is more environmentally unfriendly over the course of its life than a Land Rover Discovery. |
Dungeon Crawler Posts: 890 Joined: 7 Aug 2006 | For the record, i dont like the Prius ether, it was just the newest car i could think of right off hand. I just dont think the conversation is important enough for me to craft a flawless metaphor. |

Well, I can't say its working flawlessly and without annoyance, but it is getting the job done. I just use it for gaming.

I use it for sticking it to the man. And by the man I mean everyone whom still uses XP. And by "sticking it to" I mean moderatly irritating, not literally engaging in some kind of homosexual blasphemy to discourage the use of XP. "Disclaimer: I do not degrade or discourage those of you whom engage in the use of homosexual blasphemy for your own gains, I just personally prefer to not use such tactics to sway people into my way of thinking/doing things."

I would love to know your old system specs. I built this current PC with Vista Premium 64. Has been running since 2/08 without a hitch. |

I use Vista Home Premium 64bit version and have had the same stability issues...

Wow. I am always confused by comments like that. In complete honesty, I have had absolutely no issues whatsoever. I had one problem about a week into the new OS, but was a graphics card issue that was easily resolved with a new driver. Other than that, I have installed new/old(sometimes VERY old:Homeworld,Fallout, etc.) games and software that have run with no problems. Obviously we all have so many different variables when it comes to hardware configurations that coming up with a blanket fix for everbody is impossible. But one common issue is budget components. I notice the more highend and/or mainstream your hardware, the fewer issues seem to crop up. I would attribute this to MS and the bigger hardware manufacturers working together to get their products "online" with the new OS sooner. Since they are going to be purchased by the majority of consumers, they get the red carpet treatment. I sympathize with those that have problems, but at the same time I am happy with my lack of them. I love Vista, its pretty and feels like I have more control over what I want my PC doing at any given time. The layout seems more intuitive and user friendly. Of course these are my opinions and I ma sure there are those that would argue every point I made. But it does not change the fact that I am having no issues with my copy of Vista. |
WarCry Choice Posts: 4759 Joined: 6 Dec 2004 | For those rigorously sticking to XP it may be worth noting that Windows 7 (coming in 2009) will be using the same kernel and have the same look and feel as Vista. I get the feeling soon after it launches, all support for XP will drop (as microsoft do with older operating systems) and most programs will require Vista or higher to operate. So if you're not switching due to hardware limitations, man up and buy a better rig. Soon you'll have to. I |

Master Looter Posts: 1870 Joined: 13 Oct 2008 | VISTA!?! did you use windows ME as well?!? LOLOLOLOL! vista has been cancelled and will lose support in less then 2 years, it will be replaced in 3 years by windows 7... catchy name, should be lucky... |
Master Looter Posts: 1611 Joined: 27 Mar 2008 | Holy inapproperiate thread necro! Don't diss someone because of the OS they use. I dislike Macs (used them for several years) and I don't make fun of anyone for using it. Same with Vista. Besides, Vista may lose support in 2 years or so, but XP's already going away. I've found my copy of XP to be more buggier then Vista. 7 looks too boxy for my to like. |

So many things wrong with this I just don't know where to begin. 1 - XP is ALREADY cancelled 2- It's been quoted vista will have support for at least 4 years following the launch of 7 3 - 7 comes out next year Some people really need to look things up before making themselves look like idiots on a public forum. My pc broke some week ago and i bought a new one with Vista, i'm having trouble with the picture viewer...it sucks so baaad! i can't even open .gif's with the damn thing. i want the one from XP back, so what i wanted to know was if it's compatible with Vista or not? or does anyone have a better program/idea?

Master Looter Posts: 1611 Joined: 27 Mar 2008 | It's more then likely not compatiable as that's the new version. I'm sure if you google an image viewer somethign worthy would come up. |

You win the thread. That's what Vista really seems like, isn't it? A big experiment so that Microsoft can release the version it should've released in the first place. Don't get me wrong- I've used Vista for almost a year now and haven't had too much trouble with it, but I'm greatly looking forward to the improvements 7 will bring.

I just suffered a massive graphics card death (RIP my sweet little 8800GTX) and decided to upgrade to a 9800GTX, I also took the opportunity to fiddle around, yanking out any cards I wasn't using (I had 2 5.1 sound cards and 2 network cards for some reason) and have still not used up a hardware change. It really only does seem to be for major hardware changes. I |

Isn't every new OS release a big and long Beta test? Heck, even XP took a while before it got streamlined around SP2. |

slow? probably not the OS, but most likley his PC. Vista is built to be used with atleast current mid range systems. Office machines with lame gpu's/cpu's less then 1 gig ram etc. shouldent be using vista.
