Wow, I'm not liking the 60% instanced based game play. I was looking at this game to pick it up but if the game is going to be that much instanced base I really don't think it's the game for me. To bad really I've been looking for a Sci-fi game for a long time. I've tried instance based game like guild Wars and City of Villains but i got board of them very quickly. I think thats going to be a big turn off to a lot of MMO fans looking for a Sci-fi game to migrate to. I'll try out for beta but I'm very skeptical of this game now.
Seriously? You know that the dungeons in WoW are all instanced, right? 60% instanced means that 40% is not. I don't see the problem. There's still plenty of area for adventuring. At higher levels in WoW most people are either in BGs or instances. There are a lot of benefits to having instances and most people prefer them. You can't compare it to games like Guild Wars that is 100% instanced except for the staging areas. 60/40 sounds like a good ratio. 40/60 in the beginning.
I'm not saying that it wont be a good thing having a lot of instanced base content I'm just saying that 60% is a lot. For me I like to explore the game world more than jump through a portal where I'll never see any one for the whole time I'm there. Makes me feel isolated and like I'm playing a single player game more than an MMO, to me any way. Hopefully my beta key will come and I can see for myself, until thin I'm a skeptic.
Well, the beauty of instanced material is that it allows all players to experience the full game. Non-instanced MMOs fall into the problems of groups "camping" spots, which allows them to hog all the major content. Since their is no recourse for this behavior, instancing is the simple solution.
Agreed. This is especially the case when new non-instanced content is released. While WoW and CoH aren't the gameplay wise, they do fall under the MMO umbrella. Thus, comparing the MMO experience (rather than specific gamepay) is quite valid. I think it's fair to say that when new outdoor content is released for WoW, those areas get very crowded to the point where they're almost unplayable. HFP and Zang when TBC came out are great examples of this. You essentially have to suck up a day or 2 of /played time to get to more enjoyable parts of the game i.e. Terrokar/Blades Edge. As far as I can remember, this was never the case in CoH because grouping was very easy and well done. Also, the instancing of content gave the player the ability to actually play the game rather than fighting others for content. I realize some people like the competition, but personally, having played WoW for 2 years and retired from it ... the one thing that annoyed me the most was logging in and not having anything to show for 3-4 of /played time due to how certain aspects of WoW are designed.
Tabula Rasa: Exclusive Interview #2
In the second of our twice-monthly interviews with NCSoft's Tabula Rasa, Community Manager April "CuppaJo" Burba talks to us about the death penalty, level restrictions, raids and more subjects. Remember, check back in a couple weeks for more, as well as our report from an even they're holding this week in Austin.
Answers by April "CuppaJo" Burb
Questions by Matt Lowery
April Burba: There is no 'sidekicking' system, but between the cloning system and the wide level range with which you can still be affective against enemies it should be easier than most MMOs.
WarCry: Raids! Some people love them, others hate them. Will there be raids in TR and how will they be handled? What do you plan to be the average size group in TR?
April Burba: So we have large instanced areas - but the max group size will be the same as all other groupings - 6. As for stuff to do with large groups of people, there are large enemy controlled bases which if players wanted to take them over would require working together in large groups. More like castle sieges.
WarCry: We know that if your character dies in TR you will respawn at a checkpoint. What other penalties are there for dieing?
April Burba: We know we will have a death penalty, but it has not been added yet and we aren't really ready to talk about it until we have had a chance to put it in game and see how it works out.
April Burba: Oh yeah - we have body, mind, and spirit stats. When you level you get points to put in these stats as well as points for your skills.
WarCry: You have said that Tabula Rasa will use Instancing. Could you explain how often we will see instancing, and what kind of things we can look forward to seeing in the instances?
April Burba: Instancing runs about 40% of the game at the start and then moves to about 60% towards the end. Instances are more like single player games - lots of story, lots of amazing things going on. Instances in TR blow me away. There is more thinking going on in instances with cameras, alarms, and interacting with your environment and it's just cool as hell.
