Sorta true. It's going free to play, or you can buy a subscription. F2P people will be limited in what they can do, unless they buy modules with Turbine points with real cash.

Lots of details here: http://ddo.warcry.com/articles/view/editorials/6266-Inside-DDO-Eberron-Unlimited

The release date for DDO Free to Play is today, september 9. You no longer need to buy the game, the game client is now free. It's also free to play, but if you want to become a hardcore DDO player, you'll find yourself way too limited and might want to become a subscriber (VIP) instead to have access to the entire game with no extra cost, but if you are more a causual player, or if you already play more than one game and want to try DDO and have an hour or 2 each week to give to it, Free to Play is perfect for you.

The Free to Play is only in the US for now.

Let's hope they expand this to Europe as well. If MMORPG's such as Guild Wars can offer decent value for free, why not DDO?

Or is there something that I'm missing here?

I'm sure they will expand it to Europe if it's a success in US.

Now, the F2P model is kind of a misnomer. Think of it more along the lines of old school pen and paper D&D. Instead of getting the whole thing all at once, you get the core game and access for free, but the exclusive campaign packs cost extra...

That is actually interesting to know. I have heard about it and a free play. Never good to turn that up.

Well this seems pretty cool, I never had any interest in this game but if it is going free (even with limitations) I might give it a shot.

Go my Trout Minions.

however it looks like it may evolve into play with crap for free, goods need your wallet.

If you have a good deal of patience, even those goods can be gotten for free....everything in the game can be gotten for free. Heck, follow the free player strategies and you could be buying (with free store points) the best adventure packs available in a matter of hours.

So you either don't really know the details on what's being offered and how to earn the rest, or you're one of those players who thinks they should give you everything right up front for free.
