I'm kind of interested in this game but I'd like to know before I buy:

Do people roleplay much in this game? If so, where and how does this work?
Also is it a good RP environment? Are people good at RP or kinda not understand it?

I'll answer with what little I know about the RP side.

There are many RP'ers, even RP guilds, though I don't know which server they are mostly based in or the guild names, but I see a lot of RP posts in the forums. I do have to say it's not a majority of the playerbase that RP's, but it's pretty large nonetheless. It is a game first and foremost.

If you are really big into RP then you may wanna check out some permadeath guilds. There is even a whole forum section devoted to the Permadeath style of playing. Different guilds have different rules on it, but generally the basics are that if your character dies, and your guild-members can't rez you on their own, then you consider that character permanently dead and either delete him or if you wanna keep the character you can remove him from the guild to show he's "dead" and roll up a new guy to play.

I may actually try this out, as I've read some of the forum posts about permadeath playing and those guilds tend to have a LOT more fun and memorable experiences.

I really wish i had got started , i got ahold of a set of books... by no means cheaply... and then my friends gave up on the idea of D&D and i lost interest to play without them.... shame, it seemed fun

Just to be clear, are you talking about playing the D&D from the books or the D&D Online Computer game?

My impression was these threads were talking about the online computer game (found here at ddo.com ), but it doesn't have any books.

I am definitely talking about the computer game.

Nalarion is definitely talking about the books. I have no idea why. Perhaps some people struggle to associate RP with computer gaming.

uhhhm, there are rp guilds on thelanis and sarlona. Can't remember the names of the guilds
off the top of my head. some play light rp and others play full on in character all the time.
your best bet (since you don't have to pay to get the game anymore) is to just download the game and try out the different servers.

When you log in, send out a message on the advice channel. Any message prefaced with /a
should go out on the advice channel. Ask, hey are there any rp guilds around? then wait
a bit for a helpful soul :)

Okay, I'm into hardcore RP only, I don't even see the point of RPing at all if you're not going to do it properly 100% of the time.

So this game is completely free to play?

it can be (completely free to play) if you're willing to work at it.
there are many quest chains that you need to pay to unlock or spend a lot of time
grinding favor (faction/whatever) for turbine points to pay for it.
but the real place to be asking these questions would probably be the ddo forums.
You'd get a lot more answers and probably more informed ones as well there.

If you're into hardcore RP then I'd recommend looking for an RP permadeath guild since anything less than permadeath is NOT hardcore RP. Every RP or Permadeath guild will have a set of their own rules on RP/Permadeath, so look around the DDO guild/permadeath forums for a guild that fits your style.

As for the game being completely free, yes it is....though not all of it at first. All of the free content you have access to when you first start will get you to level 11-13 or so out of the current max level of 20. As Herzkos said above, you earn free TP simply by questing and earning favor. These TP you earn for free can then be used to buy (or unlock if that's a better way of looking at it) some of the higher level adventure packs from the DDO store. Running these newly bought adventure packs would then gain you a few more levels and earn you even more free TP which you can use on even higher level packs, etc., etc. So, it may take a lot of quest grinding, but it IS possible to eventually get everything for free.

Really though, since you're such a hardcore RP'er, and permadeath is the only way to play for a true hardcore RP'er, then I'm willing to bet that none of your guys will live long enough to reach max level. I browsed through the Permadeath forums the other day and I read that there were only a few permadeath players who ever reached max level (level 16 at that time) without dying.

Good luck.

I don't care about max level and things like that. Caring about levels and grinding is not the way a true RPer plays. I only care about the character, the story, how immersive is it, and if I'm having a good time with those things.

Thanks for the tips.

I also strongly suggest that you search on the forums before deciding on which server you settle on. Just to make things clear, Permadeath dosn't always mean RP, but most if not all hardcore RPers will play permadeath style because it's more in the spirit of DnD PnP.
