Newsletter Discussion: Achievement Hunting?

This week's Escapist is all about Achievement systems in games - online or off. This week, we'd like to know:

Do you like Achievements in your games? Have you ever gone out of your way to earn them?

Share your thoughts with us and post in the discussion thread!

OH...I have, I have! Call me an LOTRO achievement junkie. Yep...that's me!

Oh God..........achievements *drool*

I like acheivements, it is nice to have those little goals out there.

Yes.. Especially if visible for people to see and for us to brag about!! =)

I like them especially the ones that can make you pick up a completed game to try something crazy.

I like achievments, but I never realy try to get them unless I have alot of gamer score in that game already.

Only if a game has no real depth. Overall I find them pointless but they're nice here and there.

I feel they work well in video games, just to give you a bit more replay value.

Can I make it through Intense difficulty without dying? Dunno....but I'm damn sure going to try.

I also feel they work a bit less swimmingly on forums and other non-game mediums. They just lead to trolling and general useless posting without any sense of community.

I like them, but I won't necessarily go out of my way to finish them all.

I like games that have many achievements but make getting every one of them an impossibility. It makes it so I don't have to hunt forever for these because I know not all are possible, but it makes it cool to find the ones you don't have. I like titles in games for exploring and that is where a lot of my achievements come from. Three of my characters also have titles in WAR for killing people multiple times their own renown rank, which is a nice challenge.

I think one of the big attracting factors of nigh-impossible achievements goes back to the glory-feelings of early video games, when the actual main storyline was almost impossible. Back then, you could still get some "whoa, really?"s when you bragged to your friends about beating such and such game. The crazy achievements remind us of the days when we'd get so frustrated and try just about any insane thing we could think of to beat some impossible boss or level, and the intense satisfaction that follows once you finally get it.

And anyway, it's just nice to mix things up sometimes, especcially in games that tend to get repetitive, like MMOs. It gives you something totally hairbrained to work towards when you get sick of farming X and Y mats for Z dungeon that you do every week.

On a related note, I am a Pie Assassin! (WAR)

Achievments are like a game within a game. I like 'em.

I see achievements as side quests in any other game, and unfortunately I am pedantic enough to try and do every single one of them. Many hours have been a wasted...

Only if they're really random. Like "Punted a dog off the edge of the map 69 times" random.

I buy new games just so I can get achievements. ;-;

Wow. Even I, a pretty darn bad achievement junkie, have never done that....
