Newsletter Discussion: The MMO Treatment

This week, we were treated to the tantalizing prospects of a Grand Theft Auto IV MMO, a BioWare-produced KOTOR MMO, and the resurrection of Star Trek Online. But there are plenty of other possible titles and franchises out there that could use the MMO treatment. For this week's discussion, we want to know:

What game, series or fictional world would you like to see become an MMO?

I'll cast my vote for an MMO based on EA's skate. How about you?

I'd go for a Fallout MMO, even though the prospects of Interplay pulling a mammoth of a task like this are slim. But a Vault dweller could always dream...

Shadowrun... the real Shadowrun not that gimped out stupid ass MS-Shadowrun. It is about as perfect MMO fodder as you can get... the IP already has built in quest givers.

DM: From the deepest crypts crawls the undead thread, it's death rattle shakes you to your core. What foul necromantic forces brought forth this foul beast.
Cleric: I attempt to turn undead.
DM: You can't this is a WoW forum D&D magic does not work here.
Cleric: Well guys we are @#$%*%!
Wizard: Agreed, I believe this Necrothread was created by a dread ForumLych, impossible to stop, without a sense of humor.
Fighter: Very well I throw a badge or some other posting reward down at the necrothread and prepare a tactical retreat.
DM: The necrothread pauses at your offer, snaps up the reward and slinks off deeper into the internet.
Rogue: Phwew! That was close... I wonder if there are even more ancient Necrothreads ahead of us?
Fighter: We will only know when we continue on our journey through the crypts of Warcry.

Any Hardcore shooter MMO (Like Gears or Call of Duty), that requires lots of hiding, waiting for the perfect moment, and serious skills.

Agreed, Greystorm. Really liked the Wheel of Time PC game, would like to see that whole canon in game. I'd also vote for The Elder Scrolls. I also think a Half-Life MMORPG is possible.

Just fiction and existing games? Sorry, I find that unimaginative and shallow.

Now, a full-feature MMORPG based on ancient Sumer, 11th Century Polynesia, 7th Century India, Jomon-era Japan, etc., etc. That would be something to celebrate!

FPS games bore me to tears. Why would anyone want an MMO based on one?

I am in full agreement on this one take the pnp books for shadowrun and make the mmo for it.

I'd love to see something similar to all the wonderful kung fu movies, with lots of hopping about and attacking people with all kinds of crazy stuff. Though I'd like to see something more generic, I wouldn't mind a Naruto MMO.

Of course, I'd also love to see another Auto Assault or Earth & Beyond.

I also would think a Kung Fu style of game based on Shaw Brother type of movies. With characters like the 5 deadly venoms and the kid with the golden arm. plus the weapons I believe the choices are endless but you would definitely have to update the story lines.

oo theres a few :)

1. would definitely love my favourite CRPG series of all time FALLOUT to be given an MMO treatment with playable humans (vault dwellers), Tribals & Gangers (surface dwellers), Super Mutants, Robots and Deathclaws all as playable races. A fallout MMO would have me giggling like an hysterical pre-teen.

2. I would also love to see one of the popular childrens monster collection franchises like Pokemon or digimon given the mmO treatment for a younger audience. our kids spend enough time on the computers these days that i'd be much happier knowing they were playing something they enojy like this than worrying about them stumbling onto god knows what kind of deviancy that floats around out there on the web and chat rooms these days.

3. I've alwyas felt the sci fi side of things for mmo has been sadly lacking, swg was good at the time but its dated now, and there are heaps of other popular franchises that could be tapped for a character and/or ship based outing.

4. World of Darkness MMO, werewolves, vampires, changelings, mages, wraiths... plenty of scope for a decent modern day horro mmo in this massively popular PnP RPG universe by White Wolf.

5. I had hoped a Super Hero MMO based in the Marvel universe would become a reality..and it almost did... still back to the wish list *grumble*

6. Harry Potter MMO, lets face it, ITs bound to happen at some point and its an interesting enough setting to make it feasible if done well.

7. decent character based Mecha MMO like Robotech or Zoids or battletech or some such would be nice, Mecha have been relegated to action only games and there is absolutely no reason why the scope of a mecha game cannot be expanded upon. there are many universes and settings out there with mecha that would lend well to a character based as well a mech inclusive MMO universe.

8. A Steampunk MMO would be nice too.. could be combined with a Pulp setting I guess for something extraordinary.

I agree with Brotoi; why only Fiction? Think the Mahabharat, Ramayana Epics of India.

but other than that i think a MMO that could include the complexity of any of the GURPS PnP worlds and character creation with the ability to build yr own stories. I mean if we are gonna dream...lets dream big!

While I adore Fallout and Shadowrun (the pen & paper RPG, NOT the weak excuse for a FPS), why not merge the two? And maybe we could add a dash of Conan for some extra kick. A post-apocalyptic science-meets-sorcery MMO would be amazing. Throw in some Jack Kirby designs and cheap wookie knock offs. We could call it the Thundarr the Barbarian MMO! If you don't know Thundarr, you should google him. Now if only they'd make this MMO and release the DVDs as a promotion.

Since this is highly unlikely, I'd love to see a Fallout or even a Gamma World MMO.

um a SW MMORPG not owned by SOE ?

How on earth does one take a huge franchise and drive it into the ground? How on Earth does Smedly keep his job? Beats me..... this is one MMORPG that might have been a WoW contender if done right

Harry Potter and Pokemon definitely. I think Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy might make an interesting premise for an online game, especially if you look at the old text adventure game, but the gameplay would have to be different from what's on the market today.

I'm looking forward to the Stargate and Firefly online games. I've also considered that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer universe might make for a good online game.

how the hell would hitchikers guide to the galaxy be an mmo? :D and pokemon lol that'd be so bright pinky and fuzzy !

I'd like to see a film noir version mmo like the max payne settings altough i am not quite sure what the objective of the mmo should be then.

Any FPS would be really weird when turned into a MMORPG. Maybe a Fallout game turned into a MMO could have some potential.

I would LOVE an old-style turn RPG to become an MMO, it would be like a normal MMO, but you would have a party of other people to travel with you and when you hit something it would become a battle, going to a special battle field and such.

Also, I'd like for there to be a Zelda-style MMO ^-( n\\\\n)^ I know, I'm lame <3

Round and Round and Round and Round and Round we go!
