Newsletter Discussion: Barrier to Entry

A coworker of mine really wanted to play the Age of Conan beta. When he heard that FilePlanet subscribers would have the chance to download the client and play it themselves, he jumped at the chance. But 24 hours and dozens of gigabytes later, his will faltered. Have you had a similar experience? For this week's discussion, we want to know:

Are system requirements, hard-drive space and download times preventing people from playing MMOs?

Tell us what you think in the comment thread!

Yes, I have - with Tabula Rasa Had plenty of HD space, but my video card wasn't up to speed. It handles CoX tolerably well, by wasn't quite up to snuff for Tabula Rasa. When did I find out? After I'd downloaded the beta and tried to start the game. >.<

To be fair i'd like to try MMO but with the huge sys requirements it might run like a comic style where you have to go through frame by frame.

Part of the success of wow were the low sys reqs

HD space has never been a problem for me. It's always been the video card or memory.

Sadly, it seems it will be a while before anyone catches on to this idea, as far as PC MMOs go. Console MMOs should enjoy much success because this isn't an issue.
