Newsletter Discussion: Do You Spoil Yourself?

With beta reports flooding the channels from two big titles: Wrath of the Lich King and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning, this week, we'd like to know:

Do you spoil yourself on upcoming MMO content, or do you prefer to discover it for yourself and be surprised?

I spoil BIG-TIME. I think I've been reading way too many posts on Worldofraids, WoW-Warcry etc. etc. about all that is awesome in WotLK.

And I LOVE it! *munch munch munch*

*edit* Sorry for the wall of text

I spoil myself but for different reasons with these releases than with previous ones. When WoW originally came out I spent hours searching through reviews and in game footage to see because it looked stunningly beautiful and fast paced. Needless to say, it paid off and I started playing WoW with 2 of my best friends, also convincing them to buy it with me. I met a ton of great people who I still keep in contact with even after having quit.

With all my prior knowledge of MMO's coming exclusively from Runescape before; WoW was like getting drunk for the first time, all the fun with none of the hangovers. Now with the info I've gained on MMOs from WoW, Vanguard, Hellgate:London, and Guild Wars, I'm often wary of the games I throw my money at. Previews provide me with an in depth look at the game without having to fork out copious amounts of cash to find out if I'll like it or not.

With WAR I initially found it to be incredibly appealing both graphically and with respect to the promised PvP and RvR functionality of the game. Recently, the NDA was lifted and people have started posting videos around the web of the game showing it's combat in action. Suffice it to say, I've become increasingly more disappointed with the overall look and (apparent) feel of the game.

WOTLK, on the other hand, is showing Blizzard seemingly going back to their roots. Combat has been sped up, huge crits that can 1-2 shot people are coming back, and the long drawn out PvP battles that plagued the Burning Crusade are diminishing once again. They're trying to appeal to a massive audience (although I hate throwing these terms around: casual to the hard-core) and everybody has different opinions on what makes a good game. I'm sure Blizzard will have a trick up their sleeves for those people that love the current affair of things, but they haven't left the fifteen minute attention span kids like myself out in the dust either.

Though I may never get back into WoW, and I know I wont be chasing WAR anytime soon, if I had to choose right now, WoTLK would be the way to go for me. The media for it gives me just so much...more than what WAR is giving. However, Chronicles of the Spellborn blows them both out of the water, both graphically and seemingly combat wise. That one I'll be following rather closely.

The point of the information being available is to showcase the game. If you don't look at it, how will you ever know if it is good or not?
