Square Enix Adds Extra Free Play Time to FFXIV

Amid harsh criticism, Square Enix extends trial time for early adopters, but will it be enough?

imageSince the launch of Final Fantasy XIV on September 30, there have been a lot of mixed reviews coming through the grapevine. Amid numerous reports of absolutely stunning graphics, there have also been some pretty harsh criticisms of the game, with John Draisey at consolepress.com even going so far as to make a list of the top ten reasons to avoid the game altogether.

It would appear that Square Enix is listening to that criticism, and attempting to stem the tide of angry outbursts, or at least maintain the customer base that it has while it works out the kinks. In a press release today, Square Enix has announced that that it will be extending the initial 30-day free play time obtained from purchasing the game by another 30 days, provided that the account has been registered and a character slot has been purchased by October 25, 2010.

Since the official launch of service on September 30, 2010, we have received a wealth of constructive feedback from the FINAL FANTASY XIV community, and the development and management teams would like to take this opportunity to express their sincerest gratitude. For those who purchased the collector's edition and began to play one week before official service began, the month-long free play period is drawing to a close. Considering the nature of much of the feedback we received, however, and the current state of the game, we have decided to extend the free trial period for all users.

The notice goes on to mention that FFXIV is "constantly growing and evolving, and the voices of the community are essential to that process," and that Square Enix is committed to implementing "whatever changes and additions will serve to make Eorzea a better home for adventurers. " Whether this olive branch will be enough to keep hold of the disillusioned has yet to be seen, but it's a good start.
