A new trailer for the SyFy show running concurrently with the MMO introduces a female Mayor.
The Defiance experiment continues with its avalanche of media exposure. The MMOFPS set in a future United States launched this week, and the television show that's set in the same universe - albeit in a different area - is due to premiere on the SyFy channel on April 15th. Aliens have landed on Earth and waged war against us humans, but one community has rallied around a Mayor to form the town of Defiance. In this short trailer we get to meet Amanda Rosewater, and she's got the gumption to lead this ragtag band against the alien oppressors.
It's almost as if she's defiant.
A companion to the SyFy television series of the same name, Defiance tales place in the year 2046. Earth is changed. Alien races, having arrived on Earth, decide to try and make it their own. The ensuing war ravaged the planet, leaving mankind struggling to survive in a world now foreign to them. You play as an Ark Hunter, venturing out into the hostile terrain this new Earth to fight and salvage alien technology.
The actress playing Rosewater - Julie Benz - has been around for a long time. You might have seen her in Dexter, or caught a glimpse of her when your mom was watching Desperate Housewives. Gamers could also recognize her voice from Halo 2 where she played Commander Miranda Keyes leading UNSC In Amber Clad and UNSC Forward Unto Dawn ships. She did not return to the role in Halo 3, however.
I am cautiously optimistic about tying in an episodic TV show with the ongoings of an online shooter like Defiance. It seems like the ultimate form of transmedia - haven't heard that buzzword in a while - that will let players feel like they are invested in the fabric of the fiction created.
Either that or it will suck, because it's an original SyFy show. There is no middle ground here.
