Sixteen teams will duke it out for a spot in The International 3 Dota 2 tournament.
Valve recently announced The International 3, the world's most prestigious Dota 2 tournament. This year, 13 teams have been invited to the event while three spots in the tournament will go to teams who have fought their way through two invite-only geographic qualifier tournaments called the West Qualifier and the East Qualifier. The runner-ups of the qualifiers will play through a Wild Card event to determine who gets the last spot in the 16-team tournament. Valve have recently announced who the teams invited to play in the qualifiers are, and while most of them are expected, it's still exciting to see who will be duking it out for the remaining slots.
For the Western Qualifier, the Dota 2 teams who were invited include Absolute Legends, Evil Geniuses, mousesports, RoX.KIS, Team Empire, iCCup, QPAD Red Pandas and DD.Dota. The Western Qualifier will take place on May 13-19 and will be hosted by GDSTudio.
Dota began as a user-made modification for Warcraft 3 and has grown into one of the most played online games in the world. Following in the tradition of Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress, Portal, and Alien Swarm, Dota 2 is the result of Valve hiring the community developers who built the mod and giving them the chance to finally build a full product out of their idea with the help of a professional team of developers and artists at Valve.
As for the gameplay, it's a little hard to describe. The camera is set in the traditional RTS perspective, but it wouldn't be fair to call Dota an RTS. And while each hero starts at level 1, and many times hits the level cap of 25, it wouldn't be fair to call it an RPG.
Lots of people have tried to assign various genre names to Dota, but we think Action RTS is probably the most descriptive. And while we don't spend a lot of time trying to figure out what genre the game is inventing, we can't stop playing it internally!
The Eastern Qualifier teams include First Departure, Neolution International, Tongu, Vici Gaming, RaTtLeSnAkE, RisingStars, MiTH.Trust, and Mineski Infinity. These games will be played out on May 20-26 and will be hosted by BeyondTheSummit.
The tournament will start with a double elimination groupstage with teams playing in a best-of-three format and transition to a double elimination bracket in the grand final which will be a best-of-five.
Groups haven't been announced yet, but if you want to check out the tournament format in-depth, head over to The GDSTudio's site where they explain exactly how it will all go down.
If you're going to be in Seattle on August 7-11 and enjoy competitive Dota 2, then you absolutely must check out The International 3 this year. Tickets for the event go on sale on Tuesday, May 7 at 10 AM PST on the official International 3 site.
