At its core, this is Reddit declaring independence from 4Chan after starting a fight with Goons.
There are a lot of moving pieces in the famous Zero Sec areas of EVE Online. Here is where everything you hear about occurs and there are some significant changes coming in the next couple months thanks to a new game and an expansion. First, Dust 514 will hit shelves on May 14th. This will bring an entirely new level of resource generation to EVE Online and an entirely different type of player. The second challenge is EVE Online's new expansion, Odyssey which is set to significantly change the distribution and gathering of resources throughout the universe. As we creep closer to the release of these two items, alliance and coalition in-fighting has been heating up. On May 4th, the TEST Alliance, which is made up of various entities associated most closely with Reddit, announced that they will be splitting off from a coalition made with EVE Online players from Pandemic Legion, a corporation most closely associated with 4Chan, and a number of other high-powered coalitions. This event is just the latest in a series of events that began in early 2013.
In EVE, a universe of unbounded opportunity awaits new capsuleers, whether they lust after wealth, crave the fight or simply yearn for adventure among the stars. The venerable and ever-updated science-fiction MMO lets you create a spaceship pilot, mine the stars, engage in corporate warfare, and live in one of the deepest MMO communities available.
Two major powers in the player controlled universe of EVE Online have been at odds since the end of 2012. To put it simply, the SomethingAwful based GoonSwarm Federation had grown too large and too rich to remain peaceful allies with the Reddit-based Test Alliance. In early 2013, there was a legendary skirmish that has come to be named as, "The Battle of Asaki" whereupon TEST proved that they could exist on their own without GoonSwarm's help. Since that time, TEST has gone through several regime changes and has fallen to in-fighting. Last night, the new CEO of the TEST Alliance offered the State of the Alliance speech where he declared that they would be leaving their Coalition (also referred to as the Honey-Badger Coalition). This makes the TEST Alliance a nearly independent and self-contained unit. This level of politics has not been seen in-game for quite some time.
Now that the Test Alliance now in charge of a significant amount of resource-filled space, new CEO BoodaBooda has his work cut out for him. The motivation for this change is essentially that TEST wanted to, "make this interesting" and while these changes certainly shake up the political situation in Zero Sec (where these corporations live), the impact may not be seen for months as DUST 514 and Odyssey create a vastly different universe than exists right now.
