6 years ago we reported that CCP's World of Darkness would be ready in 4 years. Make that 10?
News about CCP's World of Darkness comes around once a year during their annual FanFest in Iceland. This year CCP senior producer, Scott McDonough announced a few things about the state of this mysterious game. McDonough stated that there are 3 core areas that development of the game is split into: the sandbox, the coffeehouse, and the theme park. For the past year, McDonough and around 70 other developers have been focusing on creating the sand and every tool needed to manipulate it. He went on to say that 2013 development will focus on the coffeehouse (or social aspects) and theme parks (NPCs, environments, and backgrounds). If true, 2013 could actually have more than a, "Yeah, we're still working on it" announcement. There is still no reported release date for this game though 6 years ago CCP stated the game would be ready in 4 years. At this pace, maybe we will see the game sometime around 2016?
In 2006, CCP acquired White Wolf, makers of the Worlds of Darkness pen and paper games: Mage: The Acension, Wraith: The Oblivion, Changling: The Dreaming, Vampire: The Masquerade, Hunter: The Reckoning, and Werewolf: The Apocalypse. Because details about the World of Darkness MMO are so sparse, it is speculated that this game will be comprised almost entirely of the Vampire: The Masquerade IP as it is also the most well-known of the series with other types perhaps being added after launch.
Previous speculation and reporting include the possible ascension of players to "Prince of the City." In much the same way as EVE Online, these players would have sovereignty over an area and it has been reported that these players would have the ability to permanently kill player-characters. Additionally, McDonough has gone on record to say that their goal with World of Darkness is to make the game inviting and immensely deep. As a player of EVE Online who still doesn't fully understand how everything works, I certainly hope this is the case.
