Vostok Games' MMOFPS is letting in the first testers.

The cancellation of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 was a blow to those of us who favored the series' gritty, horror-tinged depiction of Chernobyl, Ukraine. Thankfully, the developers went on to form a new studio, Vostok Games, through which they're developing a spiritual successor MMOFPS - and today, that game is finally playable for the first handful of lucky players. Survarium's now officially in the alpha phase.

Announcing the news on the Survarium forum, project lead Ruslan "Stohe" Didenko has revealed what features, exactly, the alpha build contains. "At the current stage the game includes the team-based PvP combat mode only," he says. "That said, even this mode is, de facto, the primitive version of itself which will have new features added in future. Our task right now is to make sure the key game components (movement, shooting, synchronizing) work as expected."

There are two factions so far, as well as 11 weapons, an early version of the UI, and a "zone-based damage system." The co-operative playthrough and freeplay gameplay modes are not yet available, and numerous features have been switched off for the first leg of Survarium's alpha journey.

The first wave of invites has already been sent out, but it's not too later to register - you can do that over on the alpha test's registration page.

"Our goal at the early Alpha test stage is to achieve no less than 200 players on servers throughout the day and night," Didenko adds. "We understand that not all the invites sent will reach the players, so we will continue sending out the invites until we've reached the desired number of players. As the testing progresses we will increase the number of concurrent players on server and invite new participants."

In the meantime, the first screenshots are also starting to leak from the alpha, and Vostok has started a gallery on their Facebook page. Personally, I'm relieved to see they've still got that grim S.T.A.L.K.E.R. aesthetic going on, and am looking forward to its implementation in a largely online world - hopefully, we'll get to experience some really memorable teamplay.
