RIFT Goes Free-To-Play This June

Come one, come all, as Telara opens its doors to everyone for free in June.

In a somewhat surprising announcement, Trion Worlds have revealed that their successful fantasy MMORPG RIFT is going completely free-to-play in June. No tricks or trials, starting June 12 everyone who wants to will be able to download, log in, and play all of RIFT for free.

"RIFT is an amazing premium game and we want to provide our players with the best experience possible. We want to enable you to play your way by providing a true AAA MMO experience for free," said Bill Fisher, Creative Director of RIFT.

He continued, "After June 12, all players will have total access to the entire world: every dungeon, every raid, every Warfront, and every level. We won't be locking our content or advancement behind walls - our goal is to break down every barrier. We want more people playing together and more people having fun together."

He explains that the market has changed since RIFT was initially released in 2011 and Trion thinks it's important to keep up with the trends. Now that we're within the age of free-to-play, players expect more freedom, choice, and flexibility, and that's what Trion intends to offer to its players with their new model.

Yet whenever any subscription based MMO switches to a free-to-play model, there are a lot of questions involved about how things will work and what will paying customers receive now that the entire business model is changing.

On a base level, RIFT will still be getting weekly hot fixes, major patches, and feature releases. Paying subscribers, now known as Patrons, will get access to a bunch of convenient benefits like 15% more currency and the ability to travel 10% faster on mounts. Paying subscribers aren't paying to win, per say, they just get some extra perks.

Adventure in the world of Telara as either a noble Guardian or technomagical Defiant and enter a dynamic fantasy where 8 primal forces battle for control in an ever-changing landscape. Build your own class using the Ascended Soul system and embark on epic conflicts that bring you into the story, taking your RPG experience to new heights of achievement and excitement.

"We are not selling power. We are not pay to win," said Fisher. "Every piece of stat-granting equipment that you can buy from the store can also be gained through play. Our philosophy is that the very best gear in the game must be earned. You won't find a max level best-in-slot trinket that can be purchased for Credits."

To buy items from the store, Trion is introducing new in-game currency called REX (Rift Exchange). REX grants store credits to a players wallet, but it can also be traded between players or sold on the auction house. This is a unique model, as it allows players to set the value of in-game currency rather than having Trion do it.

Watch what the developers have to say about the change to free-to-play in the RIFT developer diary below.

With a lot of MMOs either going free-to-play or launching free-to-play lately, I can't help but think this is a great move for RIFT. In a market where there are so many options available for players, it's an intelligent move to make the transition, as RIFT already has tons of fantastic content that Trion can use to drive new players in.

I think this is a good thing -- I've been wanting to go back to the game for a while, primarily for the player housing options, but I just haven't had the opportunity. Rift is a solid game, a lot of fun. I hope they find lots of success with this model.
