WildStar Preview: Collecting Nexus' Secrets As The Scientist

| 22 May 2013 05:00

Check out all our WildStar coverage with a preview of the Settler path and an exclusive interview with Executive Producer Jeremy Gaffney.

For finding interesting new areas and scanning everything around you, Scientists are rewarded with Path experience. As a Scientist ranks up they'll be rewarded with special buffs, new spells, armor, and housing items. More importantly, as Scientists rank up they'll also earn upgraded Scan Bots and the ability to customize their Scan Bots. Gaffney explained there will be all sorts of Scan Bots, like types that scan in an area of effect, or ones that scan faster than others.

When playing as a Scientist in WildStar, everything is very intuitive. During our demo, I played as a Scientist in a level six zone. After picking up some quests in town I set off to complete them and summoned my handy Scan Bot. On my way to the quests, certain creatures, herbs, and rocks had a little Scientist symbol around them, meaning I could use my Scan Bot to learn more about them if I wished.

In WildStar, the legendary planet Nexus has been found. As the opposed forces of the Exiles and Dominion rush to capture it and its secrets you must pick your side and join in the fight to unlock the planet's secrets.

Currently you can't scan every single thing in WildStar, but there was plenty enough around to ensure that I was never bored. Scanning is a simple process, and to do it all you've got to do is click something, tell your Scan Bot to scan it, defend your Scan Bot from any enemies nearby for a few seconds, and that's it. Once you scan something a certain amount of times, an entry will be added to your journal where you can read more about it.

For curious players who love lore and want to learn more about Nexus and all of its inhabitants, you can't really go wrong with the Scientist Path. It's designed well, the Scan Bot mechanic adds some extra playful depth to the Path, and there is so much to complete that players who enjoy this type of gameplay will have more to do than they can imagine.
