Additionally, PlanetSide 2 players have been granted six months free time in the shooter's predecessor.
PlanetSide 2 has been big on the MMO scene for awhile now - but did you know that its predecessor is still running and being played by a stable fanbase? Originally launched in an era before free-to-play, Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley revealed that the 2003 game that revolutionized the MMOFPS genre, the first PlanetSide, is in the process of a conversion to free-to-play.
Taking to his Twitter page yesterday, Smedley discussed snags an ongoing plan to gift PS2 players six months of free time in PS1.
"We did a mass grant of anyone who has ever played PS1 or PS2 with free time in ps1," he said in Tweet speak. "We weren't ready to announce it yet because the database grant is still ongoing and won't be done till tmw morning. So please if you didn't get flagged chill. We are trying to do something cool for everyone and we were going to tell people when it's done. This also gives us more time to make it f2p."
This news coincides nicely with PS1's tenth birthday. Smedley didn't provided word on when the free-to-play crossover would occur, but we can assume it's still a fair while off. In the meantime, players should receive their free PS1 game time soon, if they haven't received it already.
