Buy some fake money and then gift it your friends in RIFT free-to-play.
RIFT is going free-to-play on June 12 and along with the business model switch, the update will also bring two new features to the game called REX and Gifting. In the latest RIFT developer blog we got some details on both of the new systems coming in Update 2.3: Empyreal Assault.
The first new feature, REX, is short for RIFT Exchange. REX is a form of RIFT item shop currency that players can purchase with real money to trade, sell, or auction to other players. Only players with good standing can purchase REX, meaning no gold farmers, spammers, or hackers allowed.
The goal of REX is to allow players with extra real money to inflate their wealth while still allowing free players the chance to get some cool premium items from the RIFT item store. Since the price that REX will go for on the auction house is entirely up to the players, Trion expects there will be a "robust economy" surrounding the currency.
Adventure in the world of Telara as either a noble Guardian or technomagical Defiant and enter a dynamic fantasy where 8 primal forces battle for control in an ever-changing landscape. Build your own class using the Ascended Soul system and embark on epic conflicts that bring you into the story, taking your RPG experience to new heights of achievement and excitement.
The other new feature coming with RIFT free-to-play is the ability to purchase gifts for other players. Gifts can be sent and recieved by everyone, both free players and Patrons.
How it works is simple. When you find an item you want, either in the RIFT store or on merchants, there will be a new icon next to the items. If an item has the shiny new icon, you'll be able to send it as a a gift via the new gifting mail window. You can even add a custom message and wrap your gifts if you want to keep the contents a secret.
If you're a past subscriber of RIFT and want to try the game out, be sure to participate in the free weekend happening May 30 through June 3. Otherwise, you'll have to wait until June 12 to try everything out when RIFT goes free-to-play.
