Which chest will you choose?
Grinding Gear Games, the developer behind the free-to-play online RPG Path of Exile, have announced the game's third season of race events. Race events are basically short-term leagues separate from the main game, complete with separate characters and goals that test players skill and luck. Along with the new race events, Grinding Gear is also introducing a new Signature Event, called the Descent League.
The Descent League will place players outside the Phrecian Forest and task them with searching and exploring a forgotten cathedral. Over a span of an hour, players will descend in to the cathedral and discover its dungeons. There, they'll encounter new combinations of monsters and bosses from all areas of Path of Exile.
At the end of each Descent level is a pair of special chests. These chests contain distinct sets of predetermined items that will help players specialize their characters. The catch is that only one chest may be chosen per level, and the choice players make can alter how the rest of the event will be played out.
"Characters and their items are permanently destroyed once a Descent event ends, regardless of whether they survived or died," explained Grinding Gear. "We wanted to design Descent as a standalone experience where we don't have to worry about items making their way back into the regular Path of Exile economy. This freedom allows us to structure how characters receive items so that there are interesting choices as they progress. We're able to give out complex crafting items at certain levels without it being unfair to players who don't play the Descent events."
Path of Exile is an online Action RPG set in the dark fantasy world of Wraeclast. Developed by a small team of hardcore gamers, Path of Exile doesn't pull any punches. With an innovative Skill Gem system, fully randomized maps, and a strong item-based economy, PoE is a love-song to the action RPG genre.
To keep players on their toes, GGG have stated that there is no town to return to in Descent League, nor are there any waypoints or portals for travel. The only way players will be able to restore their flask charges is by slaying monster or leveling up. Futher, the Descent League and its events are solo only, meaning your victory and defeat are solely in your hands.
"Allowing players to replay the same event every few days is really interesting from a game design point of view," said Chris Wilson, Path of Exile's Lead Designer. "We expect that as players work out the best ways to build characters to handle the challenge we've constructed, they'll get deeper and deeper into the cathedral."
Grinding Gear will track the players who reach the highest levels during the Descent League and award them with as yet unannounced prizes. Season Three will begin on Saturday, June 29 and will feature about 50 Descent events over the course of six weeks.
