Imagine one million mechs walking around outside instead of in MechWarrior Online.
Infinite Games Publishing, publisher of the Piranha Games developed MechWarrior Online announced rather casually that it has reached one million registered users. IGP president Kelly Zmak downplayed this achievement saying that it isn't a reflection of anything but a psychological stepping stone. With only 30 people at IGP, this achievement has certainly generated a bit of interest.
Kelly Zmak states that their one million registered users is a result of focusing on the game and the keeping the developer healthy. The publishing function however, Zmak notes, "It's just not that exciting."
Zmak closes by saying that if you're a developer looking to self-publish, "Understand what you don't know." Or, to put it more succinctly, "Find partners to help you with some of the things that you may not know."
In an industry that suffered more closures than openings for the past few years, we need to take note of successes just as much as failures. This is one of those cases. Though I wonder about how much crunch these 30 heads at Piranha had to go through to bring MechWarrior Online into beta.
