Kaldor had never seen Marta cry before. "Marta? What's wrong?" The note he received from her stated to come to visit when he had a chance, but didn't mention that anything was wrong. Marta sat silently, tears dropping from her eyes onto her slice of bread. Kaldor grabbed a second oak chair and sat down. "Why is she crying," he thought, "she never cries, not even when Graden gets sent to the lifestone." Kaldor's eyes darted around the room again; something was different. "Where is Graden?"
