Warcry.com: The crafting system piqued my interest as I've been playing. As I have been trying to make new stuff and see what all materials I need, I keep wondering about the time needed to make things. Is there is an upward limit on the time it could take to manufacture something? For example, will there be vehicles that could tie up a station for days at a time?
Mark Kern: Our crafting and research times are long by WoW standards and short by EvE standards. Our philosophy was to replace the repetitive stress disorder in other MMO crafting systems that require you to build a green scarf nobody wants 100 times before you can get the next recipe that you really want. Instead, we just said if you have the time and resources, you can just queue it up and let it do all the work for you while you go about and play the game.
We do have plans for more epic recipes and therefore research and crafting times, but these would be really, really high end items (remember Mooncloth?), components or big items and structures.
Warcry.com: The beans or, the impatient stones as I like to call them, are a neat tool that will certainly generate a lot of revenue. What else will I be able to do with beans in the future that I can't do now?
Mark Kern: Beans are our virtual currency, you can use them in crafting to speed things up, but you can also use them to purchase aesthetics and convenience items in game. For example, there is a new fast travel option (an Arcporter in Firefall terms), similar to a town portal that you can purchase for Red Beans and that anybody around you can use. We like social items like this, where the purchase benefits everyone around the person, not just the individual.
We have many more plans for Red Beans in the future. I know that manufacturing slots are very much in demand now and we do plan on monetizing those later.
Warcry.com: Will there ever be an attack on Thumpers from a creature like the Shai-Hulud?
Mark Kern: Just walk in an uneven pattern and rhythm and you'll be fine! But yes! We have a whole boss monster plan that I think will really blow people's socks off. We're talking something much bigger than our current bosses, even bigger than the Baneclaw...and the mechanics will be unique in the MMO world for these boss takedowns, drawing more inspiration from shooters and action games. Until then, keep looking for wormsign!
