Veterans from SOE, Blizzard, and Relic Entertainment have banded together to create a new AAA free-to-play PC game.
Molten Games announced yesterday in an interview with Games Industry International that it is currently working on a free-to-play PC game with a huge investment from publisher NCSoft. Two of the heavy hitters at Molten are Paul Della Bitta and Blaine Smith. Bitta previously worked as a senior director at Blizzard while Smith was a lead designer for SOE.
In the interview with GII, Bitta explained Molten's mentality in developing a AAA free-to-play title:
With the advent of mobile and social games, some gamers are starting to associate free-to-play with games that don't have the depth or overall quality level that was expected of a PC or console title of the past. This is a game that you would have happily paid $60 for at retail. We're just trying to take advantage of the free-to-play model, but we want people to have the same expectation of quality they would if they went and bought a $60 console game at the store.
From the rest of the interview, it sounds like Molten Games is aiming to recreate the old model of MMOs, which generally started small but grew exponentially on their own merits. Beyond that, Bitta did not reveal very much else about what the game will look like, stating that they are still in the process of building a team.
