Asheron's Call gets patched out of the 90s and into current networking protocols.
Asheron's Call came out in 1999 and since 2004, it has been completely under the influence of Turbine Studios. Since its release, this MMO has been getting regular narrative updates. These can be checked on the Events Page. However, one aspect of the game that has not improved or been changed for quite some time is the net code. Asheron's Call required a lot of strange ports and port forwards which made the act of logging in, or even stepping through a portal, incredibly difficult. As of July 30th, this hurdle to connect to the servers has been removed. So, if you've ever been interested in Asheron's Call or are a retro MMO player, now may be your chance to play.
Asheron's Call celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2009 which means its 15th Anniversary will be coming sometime next year. AC is an early believer in the constant narrative content. The initial narrative for the game has been constantly updated since its release cycle and is rather complicated. The most basic way to describe the way the narrative in this game is that each month, it is patched and as the months progress, different narrative arcs are completed.
With this patch, players with modern computers as well as modern routers should be able to engage with this retro MMO. It is notable that this game has not generated enough dislike of the official servers to force the creation of a private server. If you'd like to see how gamers used to play MMOs, it is certainly something you should check out.
