Fairytale-themed adventures will become available for the dedicated players.
Fairytales aren't exactly where I'd have looked for inspiration if I were an MMO developer, but hey - it's different to your usual orcs-'n'-goblins sort, isn't it? Ubisoft's Settlers Online is introducing such an update, targeted at players who've hit the level cap of 50 and are seeking new things to do.
Hot on the heels of the Science update, "The Epic Raids" brings in five new adventures. A new NPC, "the brave little tailor," marks the beginning of a quest chain to guide you through the first adventure challenge. When successfully completed, players will be randomly awarded one of two new adventures - in other words, there's more than one ending! That's something the Brothers Grimm didn't offer in their fairytales.
Level 50 players can now earn a new resource called Star Coins instead of XP, tradeable for "very valuable" items in the in-game shop.
There's new themed content as well: Magic Means and Magic Beanstalks, for instance, are collectible resources that are tradeable for new items in the shop. There's also a new specialist, the logistics expert Quartermaster General. New buildings are available to build - a magnificent residence, a gold-generating tower, and - of course - a fairytale castle straight out of Disney.
The best thing about this update, though, has gotta be the inclusion of some super-cute fairytale enemies desperately trying to be menacing. I look forward to exchanging words with Greedy Inn-Keepers and Lying Goats. For your chance to glimpse a dreamy unicorn, you can head over to the Settlers Online website.
